Note: At the age of 34 John volunteered for service in the Mexican War on June 9, 1846. He served in Company G, 1st Regiment, Kentucky Cavalry, rising in rank from sergeant to second lieutenant. He appears on company rolls until December 1846 when he went on furlough. We do not know the names of the battles he fought in or when he was captured. In Eulalie Powell’s family history is an account of John’s experience as a prisoner of war. He was chained to a fellow prisoner who died. Soon after the war’s end John returned to Kentucky where he soon died from consumption. Betsy, his stepmother, cared for him like a brother until his death.
