His obituary found among the Smit h family memor abilia caused me to link him based on proximity a nd time of birth to th at of Joseph Brown Smith. John's membersh ip in the family is strengthen ed by the fact that his brother-i n-law, Abijah Reeder, husband to his s ister, Lucinda, purchase d land in an adjoining county, Elkhart, the yea r before he an d Harriet married.
