Note: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ct/litchfield/history/1882/revoluti46gms .txt Captain Bostwick's Company had not returned home when another company was ordered to New York; this is called "Captain Couch's Company, in Col. Andrew Ward's Regiment;" most of the officers and men being of New Milford. The book of accounts kept by Benjamin Bostwick, Jr., as Clerk in this company, is still preserved, and is in the keeping of Col. Wm. J. Starr. The company was in the service two months and twenty-three days,—from Feb. 1, 1776. Names of officers and privates. Matthias Beeman === 1778 Rev War CT 7th Regt. [BLWT, 5441 iss. 4/15/1796 to Nathaniel Ruggles] Mathias Ct., Ct., N.Y., S37755. Pension records show that he registered on 18 Apr 1818 in Litchfield and in 1818 he was in Sharon, CT. 1790 Warren, Litchfield Co, CT census 1800 Warren, Litchfield Co, CT census 1810 Sharon, Litchfield Co, CT census 1820 Sharon, Litchfield Co, CT census1835 Census of Pensioners age 81 Litchfield Co, CT === http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=y oungwolf&id=I1635 === Note: I found a microfilm copy of a Beeman Genealogy that was assembled in 1954 by Clarence E. Beeman from materials collected by various Beemans, the earliest of which had been born in 1804. That material was updated in 1982 by Gwen Boyer Bjorkman in The Descendants of Thomas Beeman of Kent, Connecticut. Both stated that Ansel Beeman was the son of Mathias Beeman. That is really the only proof I have of our Beeman ancestry earlier than Ansel. Most of the information on Thomas and John Beeman also came from those sources. === Much of the information on the later Beemans came from property transactions in Mahoning and Trumbull Counties in OH, census records and tombstones in Canfield and Ellsworth. I researched the land records using the microfilmed copies at the FamilyHistory Library in Salt Lake City. I also researched Mathias' land transactions in Kent, Warren and Sharon Connecticut and Thomas's deeds at Preston, Voluntown, Stonington and Kent at the same place. Some of the biographical information on Ansel Beeman came from a series of articles written by Dr. Jackson Truesdale, a native of Canfield, OH. He had known Ansel's family when he was growing up. Most of his material was also backed up by the Wadsworth/Whittlesley manuscript mentioned earlier. There are several other books on various of the earlier Beemans, but none have succeeded in finding Thomas' origins (or convincing me that what they found was true). === Mathias Beeman was baptized in 1752 in Kent, Connecticut, one of the children of John and Sarah. He probably spent most of his life in Connecticut and was still living in 1835, when he was included in a list of Connecticut pensioners. The last time he appeared on a census was 1820. He seems to have been married more than once and had children Lewis, Ansel, Lucy, Eli, Ellenor and Nathaniel. His last wife was named Phebe and a land transaction in Sharon, Connecticut indicates that her maiden name had been Benson. I haven't seen anything to show whether she was the mother of any of Mathias' children. She was quite a bit younger than her husband and none of the children's names seem to relate to any of her suspected family, so she could have been a second or even third wife. In the 1790 U.S. census, Mathias was recorded as living in Warren, Connecticut with one male under 16 years old. It appears from this that his wife mayhave died. The only problem is that two of his sons seem to be vying for the one spot of the male under 16. In the 1800 census, there is still only one child listed in the 10-16 age category, along with two more under 10, a female under ten and a female 26-45, presumably his wife. === He was supposed to have had some problems with debts in 1773 and the court in Kent attached property in E. Greenwich. However I did find that in 1774 he had several judgments against him that were recorded in the Kent deed books. Three times the sheriff was ordered to "take the body of the said Mattathias and him to commit unto the keeper of the gaol in Litchfield and him safely to keep untill he pay unto _" In each case, the sheriff reported him to be "absconded and absent," and parts of his property in Kent were seized to pay first Joseph Rockwell and later David Phelps. === Mathias purchased two tracts of land in Kent, one in 1772 and the other in 1773. The first consisted of thirty acres for which he paid 20 pounds. The second was also for thirty acres, but he paid 60 pounds. In 1779 he and his sister, Sarah Stanton, were deeded twelve acres of land by the executors of his father's estate and in 1787 he sold his half to his sister. In 1802 he mortgaged lands in Warren, Connecticut to a Richard Elliot for $40 and two years later sold that same property to Richard Elliott for $300. (Warren split off from Kent in1786- this may have been the same property he purchased earlier.) === In 1813, he and his wife Phebe, along with Hannah Benson, Ebenezer Benson, Elijah Jucket, Anna Jucket, Ira Williams, Hannah Williams and Mary Benson sold property in Sharon that had belonged either to James or Benjamin Benson (I couldn't follow the explanation in the deed.) This means that his wife at that time was probably Phebe Benson, since the only time I have seen wives mentioned in a Connecticut deed is when they were the ones who had inherited the property. The final land transactions that I was able to find were in Sharon, in which he bought from and mortgaged property to Caleb Reynolds in 1815 and sold that same property to Chauncy Smith in 1818. That last sale was witnessed by Ansel Sterling, Justice of the Peace. === Mathias applied for a pension in April 1818 and provided a statement regarding his service in the war. He had sold his rights to land and the purchaser was required to send his discharge papers to the land office. Therefore, he submitted an affidavit from the purchaser. On July 5, 1820, he provided an additional statement saying that he was a farmer with property consisting of 3 cows, 2 old horses, an old plough, saddle and various household furnishings. His property totaled $109.80 and he said he was $60 in debt. His wife's name in the pension application was given as Phebe, age 48. He was granted a pension in the annual amount of $96. As of 1835, he had received a total of $1191.16. === Second wife: Phebe Benson, b. about 1782, married: before 1813. === Another son of Mathias, Eli, is also reported to have been born about the same time (but census records indicate he was born in the 1790's). Military: Note: Mathias was a Revolutionary War soldier in the Connecticut Line. He enlisted about July 20, 1776 for a term of four months and served at Crown Point and Ticonderoga. He enlisted again in January 1777 for a period of one year in the company commanded by Captain Swift and regiment commanded by Colonel Charles Burrill which joined the Northern Army. He served his full term and was discharged and immediately enlisted again. This time he was in a company commanded by Captain Chapman in a regiment commanded by Captain Herman Swift. He served until he was discharged on June 7, 1783. He was honored with a Badge of Merit for six years of faithful service and his discharge papers were signed by General Washington. He received warrant #5441for 100 acres of land, which was issued to Nathaniel Ruggles in 1796. === CENSUS 1790 Warren, Litchfield County, Connecticut page 258: "Matthias Beamont 1 male over 15 years 1 male under 16 years" === DEED Warren, Litchfield County, Connecticut, deed book 5, page 103: Mathias Beeman of Warren to Richard Eliot of sd Kent [all blank] === DEED 10 May 1804, Warren, Litchfield County, Connecticut, deed book 5, page 107: Mathias Beeman of Warren to Richard Eliot of sd Kent for $300 ... 1 acre ...
