  • Note: Betty Jo Jarrell 83 of Danville, WV passed away on June 11, 2011 at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Mary Estep Hendricks , a sister Gloria Sue Slack and her husband Circuit Judge Donald E. Jarrell. Betty Jo was a 1945 graduate of Sherman High School. As a young high school girl, her first job was working at Branham and Britts Hardware in Whitesville. After graduating, she moved to Charleston, WV and worked briefly for Kanawha Banking and Trust. She moved back to Whitesville in the later 1940s and went to work as a teller for the Whitesville State Bank in Whitesville, West Virginia, a job she loved. During those same years, she sold tickets at the local drive-in theatre, the JUR Drive In. Then in 1955, she married her husband, Donald E. Jarrell. Betty Jo was a dedicated and meticulous home maker, mother and wife. She took great pride in her home and loved celebrating the holidays with her family and growing beautiful flowers in her yard each summer. After the unexpected death of her husband in 1975, she was devoted to the care of her parents and her two daughters. She always put the well-being of her family first. Despite long-term health problems, she always maintained an optimistic and positive outlook on life and was known for her effervescent personality and charm. She loved music and had a beautiful voice. She loved singing in the church choir at Whitesville Baptist Church, the church of her youth, and the choir at Sylvester Missionary Baptist Church. She and her husband were founding members of the Sylvester Missionary Baptist Church where she remained a member until her death. Betty Jo loved the West Virginia University Mountaineers and was a loyal and avid fan of both the football and basketball teams. Betty Jos family would like to thank the Hospice nurses who helped with her care at home these last months as well as the wonderful Staff at the Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston, WV, who took care of her with kindness, dignity and respect until her death. The family would also like to thank the Staff of Boone County Community Organization and particularly Mrs. Shirley Prince who cared for Betty Jo with love each day at her home in Danville, WV. She is survived by her daughters; Cecelia Gail Jarrell of Danville and Cynthia Jo Jarrell-Compston and husband Steve of Danville, grandsons; Tyler Jarrell-Compston and Patrick Evan Compston of Danville, a sister; Mary Lou Griffith of Beckley and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, Sylvester Missionary Baptist Church, Sylvester, WV with Rev. Terry Holley and Rev. David Minturn officiating. Burial will follow in Amick Cemetery, Comfort, WV. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the church. Arrangements are by the Handley Funeral Home, Danville.
