At about age 10, he was orphaned. Not long after, he became dissatisfied with his surroundings and started for Reading Pennsylvania, walking the entire way. He remained there for only a short time and then drifted westward to Republic, Seneca County, Ohio. Here he met and married Rebecca Wright. They started out for the wild west. They pitched their tent in what was called Henry County about March 8, 1835. Henry County was later set off to Fulton County. They were the second settlers in Liberty Township and John sat on the first jury in Henry County.
Their first son, Charles, died at age 20. The death of Charles made such a profound impressson upon John that he gave his heart to God. Eli died in defense of his country.
They moved to Liberty Center about 1882.
Buried at Liberty Center, Henry County, Ohio.
