    --Source of information (4 February 2000): Cal McLemore ;
    I have all the 1850 census for Stegall's in Indiana (at least those in the indexes). Based on census proximity (a very shaky basis for relationships!) I believe that Jonathan is the son of Jeremiah Stegall and Linda Wright. Jeremiah and his wife are on the census for 1820 IN Wayne Co. (no record of the Township in the census), 1830 and 1840 IN Wayne Co. Greene Twp., and in 1850 Linda Stegall is head of household in IN Wayne Co. Greene Twp.
    The 1850 mortality schedule from the census gives "Jeremiah Stegall of Wayne County, Indiana, age 72, died December, born Virginia, died of gravel, occupation farmer".

    GENERAL STEGALL INFORMATION:
    My uncle did research in the US Archives and found the earliest mention of the family name dating back to 1699 in Virginia. Apparently this forefather immigrated from Switzerland, the canton of St. Gallen. Eventually the family crossed the Appalachians, with some branching off to the Midwest from the Mid-South states, others heading south and southwest.
    The various spellings of the name, as I know them and have been ascertained from historical records, include: Stegall, Steagall, Stigall. In fact, I think all of these spellings were used for an ancestor of mine who fought in the Civil War- sometimes by the same clerk!
