ID: I876
Name: Benjamin Cave
Sex: M
Birth: 1787 in Madison, Virginia, USA
Death: MAY 1870 in Johnson CO, KS
Note: "This Benjamin CAVE ( whom I will call Benjamin of Hawksbill for the purpose of this letter ) married a woman by the name of Nancy. Family Legend has it that she was from "over on the Rapid Ann River" which means "beyond the Ridge", probably from around Orange, Culpeper or Madison county. And the further Legend is that her last name was Gallihue/Gullihugh/ Gullihue. I know that her first name was Nancy. I have been to the old place on the Hawksbill in Fox Hollow where they lived." {Nancy Gallihue, daughter of Sarah Gallihue, Madison county, VA married Benjamin CAVE 13 December 1808 -Madison Co, VA marriage records. The name Gallihue is found in various records spelled all of the ways Colonel McCall mentions} sea
"Now Benjamin of Hawksbill, had eleven children ( I think) by Nancy. All of these children were born at the old place on the Hawksbill and probably during the period of 1800 - 1824. These children were (not in order of age or birth years) 1. Harriet, 2. Catherine, 3. Paschal Wellington
4. John Anderson, 5. Benjamin F[ranklin], 6. Joseph H., 7. William Arrell, 8 George B.,
9. Edmund or Edmond. 10. Eliza or Elizabeth and 11. Sarah Ann. It is said that Catherine was the twin sister of Paschal and died in infancy." { we have disproved the child Eliza or Elizabeth. She belongs to the brother Reuben CAVE. We have copy of the marriage consent signed by her father. There could be some confusion as John CAVE signed as a bondsman} sea
"About 1832-1835, Benjamin of Hawksbill, with his wife and all of their living children except one, namely Reverend John Anderson CAVE, removed from the Hawksbill directly to Champaign county, OHIO. They settled around Urbana and St. Paris area in that county. About 1840 two of the sons of Benjamin of Hawksbill, returned permanently from Champaign county Ohio to Page county VA. These two sons were William Arrell CAVE and Paschal Wellington CAVE. They joined their brother, Reverend John Anderson CAVE who had remained in Page county, VA." {John Anderson Cave had a son born shortly in 1842 after his brothers went "home". He was named Return Cave, was this in honour of his brothers return or had he been in OH.}
Benjamin and Nancy and their other sons and daughters remained in the Ohio valley or went on to other Western or Mid-Western points. None of them ever returned permanently to Virginia that I can ascertain."
