  • Note:
    James E. Crouch was living in Vicksburg by 1841. In July of that year he married Mary Bullock, and he is listed on the 1842 tax roll. Appointed a lieutenant in Company L, First Regiment, Mississippi militia on 4/8/1848, Crouch was named a justice of the peace in Warren County in 11/7/1855. (Papers of Jefferson Davis", Vol II in Ga.State Archives.)

    Was a Master Mason, see diploma.

    He was originally from Virginia according to the 1850 and 1860 census.

    A codicil to father's (John) will dated 7/5/1825 left him one Negro boy Spencer, one bed furniture, one cow and 50 dollars.

    The 1840 Warren County Census had James Crouch as having the below slaves:

    The 1850 Census, Warren County, Mississippi, 22 October, 1850, has:

    James Crouch, 40 years of age, planter, value $1000 from Virginia.
    Mary J. (wife) 23 years of age, born in Alabama,
    Minerva, 12 years of age born in Mississippi
    James S. 7 years of age, born in Mississippi
    Thomas H.(?) 4 years of age, born in Mississippi This Thomas was the son by James and M.J. Bullock.
    Christina H. 1 year of age.
    Minerva was his daughter by his first wife Louisa Garrett. Thomas, her brother two years her senior may have died by 1850.

    The 1860 Census, Warren County Mississippi, 16 August, 1860, Post Office Vicksburg, Warren Co. has:

    James Crouch, 50 years old, farmer, Real Estate Value $4000, personal worth, $2000, from Virginia with 4 years of schooling.
    Living with him is Mary, age 36 born in Alabama, Unreadable, age 16 (James Sharkey), Thomas, age 14, Christina, age 12, Willis, age 8, Mary, age 5, John, age 3 and Peter, age 1.


    James Edwin Crouch apparently was given a pass signed by Jefferson Davis which allowed him to pass through Confederate lines and bring his sick son, James Sharkey Crouch home.

    One of the James Edwin slaves may have been named Minerva, b. 1836, Bovina Ms.. She had a daughter whom she named Mary Pearl.
