All contenporary accounts attribute William's death to a stray arrow, a hunting accident. It seems likely that he shot the arrow that misseed a deer and killed the king. He certainly fled the scene immediately aferwards. Tirel was not a scapegoat or a fall-guy. Subsequently, he neither suffered retribution nor uncomfortable burden.
