      Text: Walter Tirel III, lord of Pois, was notorious in the early twelfth centruy as the man who shot dead William II king of England during a deer hunt in the New Forest on 2 Aug 1100. All contenporary accounts attribute William's death to a stray arrow, a hunting accident. It seems likely that he shot the arrow that misseed a deer and killed the king. He certainly fled the scene immediately aferwards. Tirel was not a scapegoat or a fall-guy. Subsequently, he neither suffered retribution nor uncomfortable burden.
