Text: Seth Moore died at the home of his son-in- law in Wausaukee, Wis., on Friday of last week and was buried at Kewaunee on Monday morning. Mr. Moore was one of the earliest pioneers in Kewaunnee county, coming here with his brother Joseph in 1854. Prior to that time, Mr. Moore had sailed to Kewaunee for several seasons and had hunted and trapped upon the Kewaunee River for one of more winters. Mr. Moore was born in Ohio in 1854, and came with his parents to Shell Lake and Baraboo, Wisconsin, when a small boy. Later, his parents moved to Eveland's Point, near Racine, where they lived in the same house with Abram D. Eveland, well known as a pioneer settler of Algoma. In fact, a Lovica Moore, sister of Seth, married Andreas Eveland, a brother of Abram D. Eveland. When quite a young man, Seth sailed with his cousin, Captain Smith Moore, and then upon the Rambler with Cap. Morris Wheeler. In the summer of 1853 , Mr. Moore came to Kewaunee as a sailor upon the top-sail schooner L. P. Hilliard, and made fourteen trips the place that season, the Hilliard carrying the output of Volk's mill to market. The following year, Seth Moore, Sr., and his three sons, Joseph , Seth and Amon moved to Kewaunee and took up the tract of land near the "footbridge" upon which the family lived for many years. Here the father and sons engaged in hunting and trapping, and incidently clearing and workins a small piece of land. Mr. Moore informed the writer that when he first came to Kewaunee the ruins of an old log cabin stood on the Duvall farm, and Mr. Vleau told Mr. Moore that this was the old trading post used by his brother, Jacques Vleau, the first fur trader to engage in business along the shore. In fact when Mr. Moore first came here the Vleaus were sailing a small schooner named Bellevue along the shore in the fur and fish trade. When the Moores first located at the "footbridge", the Volk mill at athat point was still in operation. It was managed that season

Text: by John Schneider , and a "new mill", further up the stream at the point now occupied by the Seyk mill, was operated that year by Peter and Antoine Lourie and "Sam" Brazean. The output of lumber was rafted down the river, and supplies were brought in by mackinaw boat from Manitowoc. Mr. Moore states that when be first came to Kewaunnee there were at least 40 or 50 mackinaw fish boats operating out of the river. The present railroad terminal station was covered with fishermen's huts and shanties. Mr. Volk had a small store there. Trudell, father of Algoma's candidate for sheriff, conducted a blacksmith shop, at the place was alive with activities and life foreign to it today. Mr. Moore married Johanna Werner, a duahger of Frederick and Margaret Wernere, in 1859, and they raised a large family of children, among whom were Prof. Ransom A. Moore, now of the State University. Dr. Clara E. Moore, of Chicago, Dr. George Moore, Mrs. Henry Heider, of Kewaunee, Mrs. Dr. Karnopp, of Mishicott, Mrs. Elmer Eaton, of Antign, and Mrs. Daniel Grand, of Wausaukee. Mr. Moore continue to live upon his farm in West Kewaunee up to a few years ago, when he retired from active farm life and wnt to live with his daughter, Mrs. Grandy, at Wausaukee. The death of the old pioneer came without warning. During the day he had been unusally cheerful, singing and relating stories of his early life and adventures. A short time before his death, he remarked to a member of the family that "this had been one of the best days of his life." Soon after he was observed to fall from his chair, and he died in a few minutes, of a stroke of apoplexy: The funeral services were conducted by Rev. C. J. R. Bulley, of Green Bay.
