    James and Catherine's farm was on Blue Hole Run near New Lexington, (Somerset Co.), PA. The area is quite remote, and is now part of the state forest system. Apparently the family never owned the property, or at least never paid taxes on it. By the time James died all of the children had married and left the farm. The family was hard-working, but by no means learned; in fact, it is likely that they were all illiterate. When the sons enlisted in the army only Daniel could sign his name. The others signed their enlistment papers with an 'X'.
