The local Justices of the Peace became famous as "Marring Squires." They and the village ministers performed some 7,000 marriages during the years until Pennsylvania, by Act of Assembly of 1 Oct, 1885 joined its neighbors in requiring marriage licenses. Amoung the Justices who performed many of these marriages were two famous Squires: Isaac Mayes and his son, Joseph Finley Mayes.
