West Alexander, a small village just inside the western Pennsylvania line and halfway between Washington, PA and Wheeling, on the old National Road (Route 40) soon gained a far-flung reputation as a "Gretna Green." The local Justices of the Peace became famous as "Marring Squires." They and the village ministers performed some 7,000 marriages during the years until Pennsylvania, by Act of Assembly of 1 Oct, 1885 joined its neighbors in requiring marriage licenses. Amoung the Justices who performed many of these marriages were two famous Squires: Isaac Mayes and his son, Joseph Finley Mayes. The excellently kept Registers of these two men are the basis for this book. Contains over 3600 of their marriages. 1978, 8½x11, paper, 258 pp
