!CENSUS: The 1840 U.S.Census for Somerset Co PA lists a Jonah Moose with one free white male under 5, one 5-10, one 20-30, one free white female under 5, one 20-30. Josiah was 27 in 1840; his son, George, would have been about 1; his daughter Elizabeth about 4. This is undoubtedly Josiah C. Moose.
1850 US Census for Fayette County PA lists Josiah Meuse with the following: Josiah (37); Vironcia (39) $1800 RE; Isaac (16); Elisa (13); George W. (11); Jonathan B. (8), Sarah Anna (5); Lea (e?) (4); and Vironcia (2). County: Fayette Roll: M432_780; Township: Springfield Twp Page: 470; Image: 518

NOTE: Tried to locate the deed where Josiah acuired this land but could not. No other Moose's listed in Grantor or Grantee indexes. The 1850 census lists the real estate under Veronica's name. She may have inherited it but could not locate. Tax records could not be searched because of their fragile condition and appear NOT to have been microfilmed or transcribed.
NOTES FROM Good Hope Luthern Church, Salt Lick Township, Fayette County, PA: Many of these same families also attended services and had children baptized in other churches of the area. A number are found in the early records of the Four Mile church, now Mt. Zion, Donegal, in Westmoreland County. Also some are to be found in the early records of the Berlin Church in Somerset. Some of the sponsors in the baptisms also were from Somerset and Westmoreland Counties. The migration patterns of most of the Good Hope families was from Philadelphia, Lancaster, Frederick County, MD, York and Bedford, then Somerset into Fayette County. The original name of the church was Gute Hoffnung, the German for Good Hope.
