Crichton, May 1989 (provided by Paula Smith , see http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~garyscottcollins/crichton.pdf): John was a spinner/weaver by trade in Scotland at the time that patent looms became widespread. The clan decided to send son William to the US to scout out a possible new home; he sailed in 1838.
