Glenn Dillard Gunn, born 2 Oct 1874 in Topeka, Kansas. He was a concert pianist, conductor and critic (published in 5 or 6 different newspapers); he studied piano at the Royal Conservatory in Leipzig, Germany and in Berlin before 1900. He founded and conducted the old "American Symphony Orchestra" of Chicago (1915). He is the author of "Music: it's History and Enjoyment", published in 1939, copyright renewed 15 Mar 1967. He died in 1963. (mostly from notes by Rosalie Woodson Collins).
Obituary in the New York Times, Nov. 24, 1963: "Dr. Glenn Dillard Gunn, 89, Retired Musician and Critic" -special to The New York Times -- WASHINGTON, Nov. 24-- Dr. Glenn Dillard Gunn, retired concert pianist, conductor and critic, died Friday in the Oakhaven Convalescent Home here. He was 89 years old. Dr. Gunn was with the old Washington Times Herald when he retired in 1954. Earlier he had worked in Chicago at the Journal, The Inter-Ocean, The Tribune and The Herald and Examiner. He was born in Topeka, Kan. and before the turn of the century studied piano at the Royal Conservatory in Leipzig, Germany. He continued his studies in Berlin and returned to the United States in 1900. Dr. Glenn founded, in 1915, and conducted the old American Symphony Orchestra of Chicago and appeared as soloist with many other .... orehestras. He was a ... lecturer at several universities. He was the author of "Music: Its History and Enjoyment", which was published in 1939. Survivors are his widow nd two daughters, Mrs. Jospeh Stephens and Mrs. Janet McLean.
