1810 US census, Kentucky, Clark County, unknown,

    males: 1(<10), 2(10-15), 1(16-25), 0(26-44), 1(>44)

    slaves: 10
(Note: next in census list is Elisha Collins, with 8 males, 4 females and 5 slaves. May or may not be related to Dillard Collins).

Progeny in this file largely confirmed by letters of Marjorie Nell Downing (Norton) in 1942 to Glenn Dillard Gunn and to Rosalie Furman (Collins). A transcription of those letters can be found at http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~garyscottcollins/.

(NDN) D.A.R. records suggest he was born in 1760. NDN knows he died in 1821 because she saw an inventory of his estate in the Clark County Court Records. NDN reports having much data on Dillard Collins after he came to Clark County, but not before.

(NDN) reports rumor that Dillard Collins was a Colonel in the War of 1812 and sought confirmation in letter to Glenn Dillard Gunn, reporter for Washington newspaper.

Slave Narratives (WPA, transcribed in the 1930's) (ancestry.com):
    State: Kentucky Interviewee: Mitchell, Scott
In 1812-1814 Winchester, the County Seat of Clark County boasted of a weekly newspaper, issued every Saturday. From the advertisement column of this paper we learned that Dillard Collins was willing to pay $10,00 to get his run away slave, Reuben, and a similar reward was offered for one "Scipio" who had taken French leave from his master, (donned) in his master's new clothes. Another ad in this paper ways one Walter Karrick offered to trade a negro woman for "whiskey", cyder and flour.

From "Kentucky Biographies", Gresham, page 475, as recorded by Nell Downing Norton:
-----John D. Collins, M.D., a prominent physician of Covington, Ky, was born in Winchester, Clark County, Ky, 11 Jul 1823. His father, Dr. Orville Collins, was born in Clark Co. near Winchester in 1797[?] and was a residen and practicing physician of Winchester [wrong] for fifty years, retireing somewhat prior to his death in 1880. He was an active member of the Christian Church and during his later years often preached the gospel. Being a man of strong convictions and great firmness of purpose, he was naturally a leader and a man of great influence. Dillard Collins (grandfather) was a native of Virginia, of Scotch-Irish parentage, who came to Kentucky and located in Clark County within a mile of Winchester. He was a colonel of a Regiment in the War of 1812, and died young. Mary Christie Collins (mother) was born in Clark County four miles from Winchester, in 1799, and died in 1859. She was a lady of much intelligence and refinement and beloved member of the Christian church. John Christie (grandfather) was from Virginia, settled in Clark County in 1812 war, after which he was called Colonel Christie. [Then there was a long article about the above Dillard Collins.]
-----Clark County Ky. Will Book 5, page 126 etc. has inventory of property of Dillard Collins as appraised 4 Dec 1821. Pages 134-135 has dowery of Sally (Sarah Montague Duncan) Collins, widow of Dillard Collins. Said Sarah having been born in 1773 in Orange Co., VA, and dying in Hopkins Co., Ky in 1854. married in 1789 in Orange Co., Va to Dillard Collins, who was born in Va in 1760 and died in Clark Co., Ky, Nov 1821. Inventory of personal property of Dillard Collins shows very handsome furniture. His widow was allotted the Mansion House, orchard and spring, and 80 acres of land.

Pedigree in this GEDCOM can be compared with "Genealogy--Collins in Union Co., KY", by Mary Johnston (reported in a posting by Graves Collins at http://www.genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/print.cgi?collins::3285.html). Note that Johnston's genealogy does not actually list Dillard Collins as a son of Lewis Collins.

    To:

    Hi cousin:

I don't have John COLLINS being from Ireland. My ancestor Thomas CALDWELL
was the guardian of his children (there is also a court case indicating he
might not have handled the estate right, but have not looked that up).
Thomas CALDWELL was married to John's sister Hettie (probably Esther) Gaines
COLLINS. George CRASK was the son of James CRASK and Jane COLLINS, sister
to James COLLINS. James and Jane COLLINS were children of Edward COLLINS.
Although I have listed wives of James and Edward COLLINS, I am not sure of
them. Jane JONES who married an Edward COLLINS is also claimed to be the
wife of Edward COLLINGS. Since his wife was also Jane, who knows until
further research is done. Another cousin who was researching Edward G
COLLINS (121212B) indicated that Hettie middle name was GAINES and that her
middle name came from Nancy HERNDON whose parents were Edward HERNDON and
Mary GAINES. I have tried researching this through the HERNDON and GAINES
lines but have not been able to locate an Edward HERNDON who married a Mary
GAINES. Maybe someday. I would be interested in any information about the
descendants of John COLLINS to add to my data.

Ancestry of Dillard Collins from http://www.web-ster.com/lhays/haysdex/D0007/I25.html. However, this ancestry is puzzling because father Lewis Collins is reported to have moved to South Carolina (see LDS). Of course there may be more than one Lewis Collins, but THE ANCESTRY OF DILLARD COLLINS IN THAT GEDCOM FILE AND THIS ONE ARE UNPROVEN AND MAY BE COMPLETELY FALLACIOUS. It should be viewed with suspicion.

An alternative ancestry of Dillard Collins comes from LDS, given along male lines with birth-dates as follows:

    Dillard Collins (abt 1751)
James Collins (aft 1735) / Elizabeth Wilie (abt 1739)
Capt Joseph Collins (1687) / Susannah Lewis (1717)
Joseph Collins (abt 1667) / Catherine Robert Robinson (abt 1690)
William Collins (1612)/ Ann Mrs. Wilds (abt 1612)
John Collins (abt 1586) / Elizabeth Caufield (abt 1590)
    John Collins (1569) / unknown

This alternative ancestry does not address the origin of the unusual given name "Dillard".
