JOHN D. COLLINS MD, native of Winchester, Clark Co. KY, born July 11, 1823, second of ten children born to Dr. Orville & Polly (Christy) Collins, she a native of Clark Co. and dau. of John Christy. Dr. Orville Collins was born in 1798, a son of Dillard and Sallie (Duncan) Collins; Dillard Collins was born in VA, one of earliest settlers in Clark Co. KY; county clerk of Clark Co. one term, farmer. At age of ten years, John D. Collins moved with his parents to Hopkinsville [Christian Co.], KY. In 1840 he commenced to read medicine, graduated March 1845 from medical department of Kemper College, St. Louis, MO; located at Madisonville and practiced with his father until 1853, then attended Eclectic Medical College at Cincinnati, OH, where he graduated. Returned to Madisonville, until June, 1861, when he joined the Confederate Army as a surgeon, until close of war, when he located in Henderson Co. KY. In Nov. 1845 he married Elvira Hatchitt of Henderson Co., dau. of John A., three children, two living: Leila, who married J.D. Gunn of Toronto, Canada West, and R[osalie Allan], who is a teacher in the high school in Evansville. Mrs. [Elvira] Collins died in 1867, and Oct. 28, 1879, Dr. Collins married Sadie McMillan of Mason Co. KY, dau. of James and Elizabeth (Webb) McMillan. Dr. Collins moved to Covington [Kenton Co.] in 1881, where he has since resided; Christian Church, his wife in Baptist Church.
From "Kentucky Biographies", Gresham, page 475, as recorded by Nell Downing Norton: -----John D. Collins, M.D., a prominent physician of Covington, Ky, was born in Winchester, Clark County, Ky, 11 Jul 1823. His father, Dr. Orville Collins, was born in Clark Co. near Winchester in 1797[?] and was a residen and practicing physician of Winchester [wrong] for fifty years, retireing somewhat prior to his death in 1880. He was an active member of the Christian Church and during his later years often preached the gospel. Being a man of strong convictions and great firmness of purpose, he was naturally a leader and a man of great influence. Dillard Collins (grandfather) was a native of Virginia, of Scotch-Irish parentage, who came to Kentucky and located in Clark County within a mile of Winchester. He was a colonel of a Regiment in the War of 1812, and died young. Mary Christie Collins (mother) was born in Clark County four miles from Winchester, in 1799, and died in 1859. She was a lady of much intelligence and refinement and beloved member of the Christian church. John Christie (grandfather) was from Virginia, settled in Clark County in 1812 war, after which he was called Colonel Christie. [Then there was a long article about the above Dillard Collins.] -----Clark County Ky. Will Book 5, page 126 etc. has inventory of property of Dillard Collins as appraised 4 Dec 1821. Pages 134-135 has dowery of Sally (Sarah Montague Duncan) Collins, widow of Dillard Collins. Said Sarah having been born in 1773 in Orange Co., VA, and dying in Hopkins Co., Ky in 1854. married in 1789 in Orange Co., Va to Dillard Collins, who was born in Va in 1760 and died in Clark Co., Ky, Nov 1821. Inventory of personal property of Dillard Collins shows very handsome furniture. His widow was allotted the Mansion House, orchard and spring, and 80 acres of land.
Note: Brothers John Dillard and Orville Collins both married Hatchett women who are related with a common ancestor William Abraham Hatchett. John's wife's ancestry is Elvira Letter from Nell Downing Norton to Glenn Dillard Gunn of 23 Jan 1942 states that JDC's residence was Covington, KY, and that JDC is GDG's grandfather, and that JDC is first cousin of NDN's grandfather, George Campbell Hays, Jr...
