[RWCollins]: Of Scottish descent. She was of the long line of Sir Alexander Scrimgeours at Dundee. One of the Alexanders is mentioned in "Scottish Chiefs". She inherited an estate in Scotland, and would have had a title if she ha been a boy, as the Scrimgeours have been hereditary standard bearers of Scotland for 8 centuries.
Scottish-American Heirs, 1683-1883 (ancestry.com, court, land and probate records): Furman or Scrymgeour, Eliza, of Sumters [sic] SC, heir to grandfa George Scrymgeour of Thornhall, reg. 27 Jul 1835.
[Letter by Chandler Furman]: After James Scrimzeour died in abt 1805, she was in correspondance with her grandfather, George Scrimzeour, as a result of which she, her husband, and several of the older children went back to Scotland where they lived for a number of years.
Eliza was involved in a suit presented before the Scottish House of Lords to gain title to entailed lands and to the title of Royal Standard Bearer of Scotland. (4 Mar 92) SCRYMGEOUR- Standard bearers for the king for 800 years. Titles from knight to earl. Her father was prospective head of house, died on way to America. Eliza was born posthumus. When her son Richard was 19 she went to Scotland to claim title and estates. The family lived there for two years. Received large estate which was converted to money but failed to get title for son Richard. The title was Scrymgeour, Earl of Dundee.
