[Letter from daughter Ruth Virginia Miller to Gary and Peg Collins, ca. 1985].
    Dear Gary and Peggy,
I am a bit late but I enclose xeroxes of all the family history that I have.
Note: one of ma's younger brothers was named after the Chief justice of the Supreme Court that did the Dred Scott decision.
My parents were married in 1910 after a 2 year courtship. Sometime in that period when he came down to visit [from Scranton] (2 days and one night on the train in those days) he couldn't see her. Brought up in those isolated mountains, she had missed the childhood diseases--so now living in town--Richwood where she taught--she began to get them and was put in quarantine and couldn't see him. She got others [diseases] when we did. Anyway he was sent by a Scranton bank to help open a new bank in Richwood. She heard him sing in church and that was that! He had a lovely tenor voice.
That first year of their marriage her two youngest brothers and her ma died and she couldn't go back to visit.
The project of her uncle of taking the family to the deep South when it was evident the Civil War was over was fairly common at that time. Many left the country--there was a whole colony of them in Brazil.
    Love, Ruth.
    Enjoy.
