ID: I614
Name: Benjamin Oliver
Sex: M
Note: Note there was a Benjamin in Hanover Co. VA of this age but he remained there past 1810. Was that Benjamin the one who was mentioned as a son of James, son of James in his grandfather's will in 1787 in Amelica, Co VA or ????
from a manuscript entitled: "The Oliver Family" by Dorothy Haizlip Ward, 1990 page 7. She suggests he MAY be the son of William Oliver 1st because he "served as a soldier from Caroline Co., VA in 1758 'until discharged'" and he was not menitoned as a decendant of John Oliver. BUT the will of this William does not mention a Benjamin so I think this is incorrect.
There was a Benjamin Oliver serving as a solider in Caroline Co. VA in 1758, who could be this man. This record is in the "French and Indian War Land Bounty Certificates" on Ancestry.com. Benjamin Oliver, Caroline Co. 10 Feb. 1780 No. 598 .....served as a Soldier till properly discharged in 1758 Tho Jones DC This Benjamin Oliver eventually received free land for fighting in the French and Indian War, "but not without a fight with the commonwealth". (Reported by Tony Kent, Heritage Center, Caroline County, VA in 2007) Thu, 21 Feb 2008 Thanks for your inquiry. French and Indian War bounty land for military service performed 1755-63 was not granted until 1779-1780 due to the Proclamation of 1763 issued by the Crown, which prohibited settlement west of the Alleghanies. The soldier had to come into his local court and prove his right to the land by stating when he served, with whom, and at what final rank. The Library holds the record of French and Indian War land bounty, which is on Land Office reel 360. Oliver received 50 acres as a private on certificate #598. He does not appear to have gotten a land grant for it, and it was common for people to assign (sell) their right to the land to someone else. Minor T. Weisiger, Archives Research Services Coordinator, Library of Virginia
My guess is the above relates to this Benjamin and his father may be Peter, son of John and Ellinor. There is a Peter Oliver who died about 1808 that this family is somehow related to.
