20-12-42 W7768/G Halifax. cr Eades Farm after engine problems, 405 Sq, RCAF crew (6) killed

Aircraft was on anti-Sub patrol and possibly had been damaged. It suffered engine failure an d is reported having dived into the ground nearr Calbourne, Isle of Wight on 20-12-42. Sorr y no crew details and oddly I couldn't find a mention of this aircraft in the book Wight Ai r Wrecks by A.T.Gilliam. There should be an 1180 for this if you write to Hendon, which shou ld at least give the pilots name and possible cause.

    1. Taking off from 405 Squadron Beaulieu airfield at 06.30hrs on the 20th December 1942 the a ircraft was setting out on a anti - shipping mission in the Channel. After passing over the W est coast of the Island and still climbing, the aircraft being flown by Flt Sgt. L. Snarr dev eloped catastrophic engine failure. Within a matter of a few seconds the craft was out of con trol and plunged headlong into ground at Eades Farm Newbridge. It immediately burst into a b all of flame killing all the Canadian crew made up of Flt Off. F Stolley , H Crioft , N Van B runt, N. Fugere, G. Wagner and the pilot Flt Sgt. L. Snarr. Rescuers were on scene within m inutes but nothing could be done as the heat and flame was intense and from the danger of th e many unexploded bombs that had been thrown clear of the aircraft.
