Note: "Eli (Ward) and Elizabeth (Webb/Burress) settled on two hundred acres at Stainville (Elijah's Fork), Anderson County. Eli built a water and steam grist mill in the branch by his home; this old log home burned down in 1992. As a wise man once said "Integrity is the trust that once you lose you wish you had back.' It is an accepted family story among most descendants of Eli Ward that Eli was a preacher of the gospel who fell from grace in the eyes of his neighbors. Eli helped build and pastored the Beech Fork Church for a time. Eli and Elizabeth were both members there. During the Civil War and afterwards Elil built several small cabins for poor families to stay and help do the work on his large farm. One of the workers Louze or Louisa had four children reported to belonging to ELi. Eli had married this girl to his son John (this marriage is recorded in the 1870 census only). Beech Fork Church had a business meeting and told Eli and Elizabeth to go home and get their house in order. John and Lueze's marriage lasted a short time. John drank a lot and abused Lueze and children. Lueze and children left Eli 's and Elizabeth 's farm and moved in with John Carroll and wife Sarah, her grandmother who lived on Red Oak Mountain. According to records the girl was Louisa F. Tucker Ward Rector (born 1848) and her children were French, Perry, Susie, and George. Louisa shows up in the 1880 Census, Campbell County CD 14 with children Perry and Francis in John Carroll's home. John Ward shows up in the 18 80 Census, Anderson County CD 10, with Susie and George in the home of Jacob Miller. John Ward was not the father of Louisa Tucker's children. Eli w as named their father in some death certificates.
On Monday, November 1 4, 1870 in the Clinton Courthouse Elizabeth Ward sued Eli Ward for divorce, stating Eli Ward and Susan Roberts were guilty of adultery. Rev. Moses Phillips, JP also signed as a witness. In the Clinton Courthouse about the same time in 1870, Duncan McGhee and Finley Patterson swore out a complaint charging
Eli Ward and Clara Tucker with Adultery. Clara Tucker (1850-1876) is buried in John Carroll Cemetery on Red Oak Mountain near the dividing line of Anderson and Campbell Counties. Eli Ward was married to Susan (Sookey) Roberts. Eli's last marriage was to Jamina Jones, 8/1894, widow of Cleveland Jones. Jamina stayed one night with Eli and went back home on Red Oak Mountain. The Campbe ll County Court granted her a divorce on 2 November 1897. Eli died 16 Mar ch 1897." ["The Lost Tribe of E li W ard", The Courier News, Clinton, Tennessee, Jan 7, 2001]
