    In the Civil Ward Pension file of Sterling Kennedy, son of Racha el Wa rd a nd Martin T. Kennedy, Sr. of Campbell County, Tennessee, are se ver al affid avits pertinenet to the ancestry of Rachel Ward. Among the af fida vits is t he statement of Milton Phillips, the son of Mary Polly Wa rd a nd John Phill ips, stating that he and Sterling Kennedy are "first co usin s. Our mothe rs are sisters." Mary Polly Ward's parents were Benjam in War d, Jr. and Cat herine Harman. There is also an affidavit from Du ke Ward st ating that he a nd Sterling Kennedy are half-brothers; th is is the Duke Wa rd who was bo rn in 1836. Another affidavit is from Will iam Ward (bo rn in 1837) stati ng that Sterling Kennedy "is my half-brothe r. Our mothe rs the same person ." \
    Deposition C, Case of Sterling Kennedy, No 666415. On this Ten th d ay of Oc tober 1896, at near Ligias, County of Anderson, State of Ten nesse e, befo re me, G. E. Brown, a Special Examiner of the Pension Offic e, pers onally a ppeared MILTON PHILLIPS, who, being by me first duly swo rn to ans wer tru ly all interrogatories propounded to him during this Spe cial Exami nati on of aforesaid pension claim, deposes and says: I am 51 y ears of ag e, occ upation farmer, PO address as above stated. I have liv ed in this vi cini ty all my life and was raised with and near claiman t. He and I are fi rst c ousins, mothers were sisters."

    "On this Tenth day of October 1896 at High House, County of Campbel l, S ta te of Tennessee before me, G. E. Brown, a Special Examiner of t he Pen si on Office, personally appeared WILLIAM Wardm who, being by me fi rst du ly s worn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to him dur ing th is Spe cial Examination of aforesaid pension claim, deposes and s ay s: I am abo ut 59 years old, occupation farmer, P. O. address as abo ve sta ted. The cla imant is my half-brother, our mother the same perso n. I marri ed and had th ree children before the war and lived during t he time at dif ferent plac es but within three miles of claimant all the t ime. I was arou nd home a ll through the war until ___ of 1864. I enlist ed in Co J of Tenn essee Mt d. Inf. and remained with it until it was must ered out. I serv ed under Cap tain Gilbreath all the time since chang ed to Co. G under Tynd all. I thi nk claimand I messed together at Knoxvil le during the winter '6 4-'5 (1864- 1865). Can't remember whether we did a fter leaving there. As b efore the w ar we lived here in this neighborho od ever since discharge unt il he mov ed out of here and went to Roberts M ill about 8 to 10 years ag o. -- Questi on - What disability has your brot her?"

    Deposition L, Case of Sterling Kennedy, No 666415. On this Fourte en th d ay of October 1896, at Careyville, County of Campbell, State of Te nne sse e, before me, G. E. Brown, a Special Examiner of the Pension Offic e, p erso nally appeared DUKE Ward, who being by me first duly sworn to an sw er tru ly all interrogatories propounded to him during this Special Exa min ati on of aforesaid pension claim, deposes and says: "I am 60 yea rs ol d, a far mer, PO address Careyville, Tenn. Claimant is my half broth er a nd I part ly raised him and he lived near me until he enlist ed in Co J Ten n. Mount ed Infantry. I served in same company, enlisted wh en he did Ju ne of 1864 a nd bunked with him until mustered out in same te nt. Lived ne ar him fr om 1 to 4 miles until he moved to Roberts Mill Ten n. about 10 ye ars ago."

    Civil War Pension -- Deposition O in the Case of Sterling Kennedy N o. 66 64 15:
    "On this Ninth day of October, 1896, at High House, County of Campb el l, St ate of Tennessee, before me, G. E. Brown, a Special Examin er of t he Pensi on Office, personally appeared KING CARROLL, who, bei ng by me fir st duly s worn to answer truly all interrogatories propound ed to to him du ring th is Special Examination of aforesaid pension clai m, deposes and s ay s: "I am 55 years of age, occupation farmer, P. O. add ress as above sta te d. Claimant and I are cousins. I was born and rais ed and have liv ed a ll my life in this place and have known him all my li fe. We were pl ay bo ys together and lived near each other in this neighbo rhood both befo re a nd after the war until he moved from this neighborho od 8 to 10 yea rs ago."
