Flora A. Ashford was born in Arkansas in January 1860. We do not know her maiden name and he r ancestry is a mystery. We only know that her parents were both born in Georgia.

Between 1880 and1886 Flora married the recently widowed John Alexander Ashford and they settl ed down to start a family. In April 1887 the couple had their first child and by August 189 9 the couple had five children all born in Arkansas. The family probably migrated west as so on as Flora and their newborn child, Alexander, were healthy enough to travel.

Flora and John moved to the Indian Territory and resided in the Choctaw Nation sometime prio r to June 1900 where the family appeared in the Federal Census living in the same area as Joh n?s brother James Ashford. The 1900 census lists Flora and John Ashford as married for 20 ye ars, but a previous entry was made and then marked through. I am using 1886 as the date fo r their marriage because John's first wife may not have died until 1885 and John and Flora di d not have a child until April 1887. I therefore find it unlikely that they were married i n 1880. Furthermore the couple?s 1910 census entry lists them as married for 23 years, whic h would indicate that they married in 1887. If Sarah died in 1880 it is possible that John a nd Flora married as early as 1880, but this does not explain why the couple had no children u ntil 1887.

In 1904 John and Flora had their last child and by 1910 they had moved to McCurtain County, O klahoma.
