Note: Lewis Bryant McGlohon, 81, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2007. A memorial service will be held Sat urday at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary of First Christian Church, 615 W. 14th Street. Burial in Pin ewood Memorial Park will be private. Bryant was born in Ayden on August 7, 1925 to the late D oc McGlohon and Nina Ester Smith McGlohon. After graduating from Winterville High School in 1 942, he worked in the Norfolk Naval Yard before joining the Aviation Cadet program of the Arm y Air Corps in 1943. After completing pilot training, he remained on active military duty fo r 30 years during which he flew numerous types of twin and four engine aircraft for more tha n 6,000 flying hours, as both instructor pilot and aircraft commander. He participated in th e Korean War and returned after the conflict ended to serve another tour in Japan and Korea . During the Cold War, over a nine year period, he maintained combat ready status as aircraf t commander on tanker aircraft of the Strategic Air Command. He received recognition for exce ptional accomplishments while also serving as Director of Safety on several Air Force bases d uring the period of 1960 to 1973. He and his family served the last three years of his caree r at Goose Air Base, Labrador, Canada, where he was the Base Director of Flight and Ground Sa fety. While stationed in Tampa, Fla. he attended college at night and subsequently graduate d from Florida Southern College in 1963. Later, graduate studies were pursued at the Universi ty of Southern California. He achieved national certification as a Safety Professional, and w orked from 1974 to 1987, as both safety inspector and consultant for the N.C. Department of L abor. Upon returning to Greenville in 1973, Bryant became involved in community activities. H e was an Elder of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and served as Chairman of it s Official Board. He remained active as an Elder and was Chairman of the Property Committee f or a number of years. Members of the Fellowship Sunday School Class had a special place in hi s heart. Bryant was also active in fraternal and civic organizations. He served as Master o f the Ayden Masonic Lodge on three occasions and was recognized by the Greenville York Rite M asonic Bodies as a Knight of York, Cross of Honor, because of his many contributions to tha t organization. In the Order of the Eastern Star he served as Chapter Secretary for ten years , was Worthy Patron three times, and served once as District Deputy Worthy Patron. He was als o active in the Golden K Kiwanis Club of Greenville, the White Shrine of Jerusalem, and helpe d form the Pitt-Greenville Civic Club. Bryant was married to Mary Pendergraft of Eureka Sprin gs, Ark. on Oct. 7, 1951. In July 2002 his devoted wife and companion of 51 years died. In ad dition to his parents and first wife, Mr. McGlohon was preceded in death by brothers, Waldo " Doc" McGlohon and Wayland McGlohon; sisters, Ellen Cox Bradford, Betty Ellis McLawhorn and Pe ggy Wood; and three other siblings who died at a young age. Together Bryant and Mary adopte d and reared three children who survive, Michael Bryant McGlohon of Black Mountain, Kimberl y Diane McGlohon of Winterville, and Nancy Kathryn Corbett of Winterville. They, in turn, ble ssed the family with four granddaughters, Alex McGlohon of Black Mountain, Mary Kathryn Corbe tt of Greenville, Ashley Christine Haynes of Winterville, and Melissa Knotts of Winterville ; and three great-grandchildren, Kaylee McAbee, Laylah Haynes and Skyler Knotts. Bryant is al so survived by a sister, Patsy Hardee of Grifton; three brothers, Don McGlohon and wife, Jane t, of Greenville, Robert "Bobby" McGlohon and wife, Alys, of Kerrville, Texas and Wayne McGlo hon and wife, Charlotte, of Summerville, S.C. The family will receive friends tonight fro m 7 to 9 at Wilkerson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made: 1 st Christian Church, c/o Fellowship Class Charity Fund, P. O.
