"The Tappans of Baldwinsville, New York", by Harvey Tappan (1851-1929)
The ancestor of the Tappan family in Michigan was John Tappan of Onondaga County, New York. Records show that he enlisted and served in a New Jersey regiment and came from New Jersey to Camillus, now Van Buren Township, in 1790. A very ancient document consisting of five leaves of a family bible and the birth record of John and Sarah Tappan and their children, was furnished me by Clair S. Tappan, Professor of Law for State University of Los Angeles, California. This record gives the names and birthdate in the ancient handwriting of 125 years ago. The writing is by a manís hand and at one sitting. It is a part of the family records and probably written by the original ancestor, John Tappan. The record follows:
    (see Family Bible copy)
Asher Tappan was my grandfather. In addition I have a record prepared by Wallace Tappan, and grandson of John, 1756, and son of Colonel Gabriel, 1783, giving the names of the children of each of the sons and daughters above listed, 58 in number whose descendant generations have multiplied and located throughout the nation from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Numerous members of these descendants still reside in Baldwinsville where the ancestors have resided during the past 150 years. Of these, the oldest direct descendants of John and Sarah are my cousin, Willard Harvey Tappan, the son of Harvey, the son of Colonel Gabriel Tappan, and also my cousin, Mrs. Martha Tappan Giddengs, the daughter of David, the oldest son of Asher Tappan. With my family I visited these and other relatives in 1924. Willard Tappan has for many years been a prominent businessman. Being exceptionally well informed, he furnished me with much of family history. Mrs. Giddengs is now 87 years of age and, as far as I am informed, is the oldest surviving member of the original family. She is a college graduate, accomplished and unusually mentally active, well informed and interested in modern life activities, local and national."

Excerpted from Onondaga's Centennial by Dwight H. Bruce (ed.) Boston History Co., 1896, Vol. I, pp. 712-35:
"John Tappen, a native of New Jersey, where he was born about 1756, was a Revolutionary soldier and settled in this town west of the site of Ionia in 1796. He died there November 22, 1818, and four months later his wife passed away; both were buried on a corner of his tract which he had set aside for the purpose and which is still occupied by the old cemetery. His children were Abram, Gabriel, Asher, Stephen, William, Betsey (wife of Henry Clark), Nancy (wife of Elijah Snow), Electa (wife of Stephen Hart), Sally (wife of James Barber), and Phoebe (wife of James Williams)."
---The canvass of 1807 showed all persons entitled to vote through owning and occupying land, and all of the thirty-eight known in Van Buren, several left descendants there. The list is of value as showing permanent residents, and follows: Asher, Gabriel and John Tappen.
