No southern jaunts or pre-season training camps were the lot of the baseball player when Emerson (Pink) Hawley, The Duke of Pittsburgh, was one of the National League's best pitchers. Handsome as they made them, he was a national as well as a hometown hero, and had his face and name on a cigar box to prove it. Off seasons he hung out at Charley Miller's Book Store, another attraction that brought the corseted belles of Beaver Dam to that rural emporium of culture, stationery and gossip. When training time rolled around, he enlisted the services of "Peanut Bill." This local character quit his market fishing to serve as trainer and catcher. Concert Hall was used until the weather softened sufficiently for them to move on to the Dodge County Fair Grounds, a half mile up Front Street.
