Anna Gideon was born on June 3, 1853 in Illinois. Her parents, Armstead and Lavina (Martin) Gideon, were natives of Ohio. The family consisted of three children, Anna, Alice and George. An un-named girl died in infancy. When Anna Gideon was about three years of age her parents moved to Iowa where they remained about six years when they removed to Minnetonka, Minnesota.

Anna Gideon married for her first husband Tom Hoffman the son of John C. and Mary Hoffman, pioneer residents of Ashley township. To this union were born ten children three of whom are living, viz.: Mary (Hoffman) Evans, of Sauk Centre, Minnesota; Naomi, of North Dakota; Effie (Hoffman) LaRue of Washington. Tom Hoffman died at Seattle, Washington, and Anna (Gideon) Hoffman married John Richardson at Sauk Centre in 1917.
