Left Belfast to go to Australia in 1834, but was shipwrecked and returned to their starting point. The passengers filed a suit against the ship owners in Liverpool.
In 1836 to New York, then Downers Grove to farm. Once he left his farm for awhile with his oxen and came back after dark and everything in the prairie around his house was changed. His wife managed to burn 100s of acres of grass. He could not recognize the place until in the morning light
Was one of first temperance men in the area, was a Justice of the Peace. One of the leaders of the Underground Railroad and was an Abolitionist
