  • Note: Some History of the Muggli Family traced back to Switzerland in about the 1500's, by Father Benjamin Stein of Cold Spring, MN, Who is the son of Fred V Stein and Barbara Muggli, the 6th child of Lucius Anton Muggli and Elizabeth Weniger, All the above lately from Cold Spring, MN. This narrative was originally recorded in the Family Tree setup by Father Benjamin for the benefit of the Muggli and Stein Families. Records as recorded: Muggli or Muckli. Families of Trimmis and Ems (Graubunden) William of Trimmis as representative of the League of Gotteshausbund put the seal on the first Pease of Kappelin June, 1529. In this peace the Hungarian alliance was annulled and the principle of "religious parity" (or freedom) was admitted in the case of each member of the League. He had a crossbow in his coat of arms. Stephan of Ems was a chief magistrate (Podesta) at Tirano in 1607; and another Stephan was Judge of the appellate court of Graubunden in 1665. (From the Episcopal Archives of Chur.) Mr. Augustin Maisson in his studies of Swiss Families reports that there are no Mugglis now living in the original valley. January, 1931 To Sr. Amanda Muggli, O.B.B. St. Joseph, Minnesota Muckli Coat of Arms. Previous to about 1800, Graubunden was an independent country, a democracy, and elected its president each year. In 1665, Steven Muckli was elected to the presidency for that country and for the excellent service which he rendered was knighted, and his coat of arms is frescoed upon the walls of an old Benedictine Abby at Trun, Switzerland. Steven Muckli was born at Ems near Chur and during the Swiss reformation with his family moved wet to Trans, his family being the only branch of the Muckly family that remained in the Roman Catholic Church. From the stories that are told , Steven Muckli was a man of great power and intelligence. According to all historical accounts, he was and his memory still is held in high esteem by the people of Graubunden. You being a descendant of the John Muggli are a direct descendant of this historical man and therefore entitled to claim this family crest. Early in the 1800's Graubunden joined the Swiss Federation and is now the largest of its cantons. I send you this as remembrance of my trip to Europe. This is an exact copy of the Fresco and it comes to you with greetings from Trans and Tuerus, the cradle of our family history. Mary Margaret Muckly Notes on the Muggli Coat of Arms. A copy of the coat of arms was produced by projecting a colored slide of Rev. Kewyrzaz' conception of what the coat of arms should be like( Zeno Muggli has the original .At this date (1995) it is not known who has this slide because Zeno Muggli died 12-27-79. Very probably one of his children. The most logical one is Father ODO Muggli, presently stationed at the Abby in Richardton ND.) onto a mutilith mat and thus copying it. Some of the color lines were added on later. Rev. Robert W. Kreutz, S.P., a graduate in genealogy and heroldry at the Technical University in Aachen contributed some to the following notes on the Muggli Coat of Arms in November, 1959. They were given along with the copy of the Coat of Arms to Zeno Muggli. Several points in the letter written to Sister Amanda and the fact that the Coat of Arms was taken from a fresco, prompted him to make the changes. The Shield of the Mugglis is a divided one. The upper two thirds in a red field shows a golden cross-bow; and two arrows in silver at the right and left of the cross-bow. The lower part in a silver field indicates a triple mountain in green supporting a red heart. The Helmet in a natural (iron) color is crowned with a coronet in gold with three points (Aristocracy). The Crest is a double eagle wing alternating colors in gold and red, silver and green. Between these wings is a green mountain with a green fir tree. The Mantel is in alternating red-gold and green silver. The Cross-bow shows that the Mugglis have been great fighters for their democratic country and for its independence. The crown with its three points is an aristocratic coronet on top of an open helmet of the 15th century. The crest repeats the green mountain with a fir tree, which is also in the officially adopted shield of the canton of Graubunden. The two Eagle Wings are a very old heraldic design, worn in most European countries during these centuries. Stephan Muckli was "Knighted". What meaning should be attached to this? Graubunden (Chur diocese) always was a democracy and a fully independent State until in 1803 it was added to Federal States if Switzerland as a Swiss Canton under Napoleon the Great. One can, however, only be "knighted" by a Kaiser, a King or Queen or a Grand Duke. The fact that he was elected by the people of Graubunden as a President proves the impossibility of a "knighting".If he or his independent state had been accidentally under Austria, France or Italy, his name would have been Varon von Muckli, or, Baron de Muckli! depending on the Country, All Mugglis would then be von , de, or di Muggli. But Swiss History shows those of the nobility are few in Switzerland, and they are the one who have been under Germany or Austria. Only a few Cantons had been under France or Italy before the Swiss Confederation. Graubunden is one of the very few cantons of the old Roman Raetia Republic and its people as well as those of the Canton Tessin speak Raetic. This is the only Roman language in the world which is still spoken as the old Romans did. It is very close to Latin, but not a Latin language as such. It is Raetic (Raeia). There are four languages spoken in Swtizerland; German for three fourths of the country, French, Italian, and Raetic. The Muggli origin is from the Raetic part of Switzerland. Muggli is a so-called Germanized word. While there is no strict nobility in the family it must have been aristocratic in order to be elected as President in 1665 because at this time only aristocrats could have become Presidents (or Bishops of Abbots for that matter) and under their kings or emperors only aristocrats could have become members if the nobility. Therefore since Stephen Muckli has his coat of arms as an aristocratic member of Graubunden, and since he was elected President, he was for his Country certainly as much as any of the nobility in a country under a king or any monarch. The diocese of Graubunden is Chur. The great Swiss Saint, canonized a few years ago, Nicholaus von der Flue, was Austrian-Swiss nobility. The canton of Graubunden is about 60 percent Protestant ( Calvinistic) and the great majority of the population are of Raetic descent and speak Raetic. The official language in Switzerland -- government, parliament and schools -- is German. In all the Schools the children must learn French even in the gradeschools because some of the cantons are entirely French, as are Fribourg, Geneva and Lausanne., Switzerland is the purest democratic country in the world and the United States are setup according to the model of the Swiss Cantons. The population of the Canton of Graubunden is about 80 per cent agriculture. The scenery of this canton is the most beautiful with its high mountains, hills and green valleys with their rivers and creeks. The dates of births of the Mugglis living in Switzerland were taken from the baptismal records at sedrun by Father Vigeli Berther, O.S.B. of Disentis and copied in October, 1967 by Father Benjamin Stein. At Sedrun he visited with Mr. Maurus Berther (age 88) who told him that he remembers seeing a votive plaque in the old church in cavorgi requested by the Mugglis in America. From the year 1851-1872 there is no record of the emigration of 35 Mugglis from the Badus mountain area. There were none there by the name of Muggli in 1967, though there were relatives under other names. Special note- during the year of about 1960, Dorothy Muggli (wife of Alphonse V. Muggli) borrowed the color slide of the Coat of Arms of the Mugglis from Zeno Muggli and by projecting the image on a white cloth, she drew the coat of arms in about a 16 inch size and colored it according to the original colors shown on the slide. The Coat of Arms was then transfered to a gray painted shield. Alphonse V. Muggli now (1995) has this in his possession. The color slide was returned to Zeno Muggli and I assume one of his children now has it, since Zeno died in 12-27-79. Possibly Father Odo Muggli, who at this time is stationed at the Abby in Richardton, ND, is in possession of the slide. The name Joanni was taken from the Parish Book at Sedrun, Switzerland. 1
