Finding it difficult to support a growing family in Corsicana, he moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico, where he practiced law from 1905 until his death in 1929. He was President of the Carlsbad School Board, Mayor of Carlsbad and a State Senator. At the time of his death he was serving as probate judge. For further information, see "Grandfather's Story", a memoir by his grandson, Arthur R Seder, Jr., published in 2994. In the City of Corsicana Directory of 1894-95, DGGrantham is listed as a partner in the firm of Grantham and Shelton (Marin L Shelton), 201 N Beaton, corner of E 5th Avenue; also (as DGabriel Grantham) as a notary public with residence at 1332 W 3rd Avenue. In Putnam, Wyvonne, Navarro Co History, Quanah, Texas, Nortex Press (1975): Last public hanging occurred in 189_? Two boys came on body, and DGGrantham, the coroner was called to the scene. An arrest followed, and conviction was followed by hanging.
