Heinz Co., Pittsburgh, Pa., plus positions with other firms; elected as a Republican by special election, November 2, 1971, to the Ninety-second Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Robert J. Corbett; reelected to the Ninety-third and Ninety-fourth Congresses and served from November 2, 1971, to January 3, 1977; was not a candidate for reelection to the House of Representatives, but was elected in 1976 to the United States Senate; reelected in 1982 and again in 1988 and served from January 3, 1977, until his death in an airplane crash over Lower Merion Township, Pa., April 4, 1991; chairman, Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee (Ninety-sixth and Ninety-ninth Congresses), Special Committee on Aging (Ninety-seventh through Ninety-ninth Congresses); interment in Heinz family mausoleum, Homewood Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Pa.
