From DNB - Attended grammar school at Wymondham and Norwich, and after 2 years in a counting house, entered Scarning School, near East Dereham, Norfolk. In 1769 he was admitted to Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where he graduated BA and was elected fellow, and ordained Deacon all in 1774. He graduated MA 3 years later. In 1780 he was ordained Church of England priest, and on 18 October 1783 he married.

On 1 Nov 1793, with 12 members of his extended family he disembarked in Quebec.
