One family record (from Gladys Borden Chapman's daughter, Helen Robinson) shows his birth date as 1841. He lived in Hyde Park on 21 Sep 1914.

He served in the following battles: Gettysburg, July 2-3, 1863 Resaca, GA, May 14-15, 1864 Dallas, GA, May 25-June 4, 1864 Kennesaw Mt., GA, June 9-July 2, 1864 Culpris, FL, June 22, 1864 Peachtree Creek, GA, July 20, 1864 Atlanta, GA, July 21-Aug 26, 1864 Sherman's March to the Sea, Nov 15-Dec 10, 1864 Savannah, GA, Dec 10-21, 1864 Campaign of the Carolina's, July 26-Apr 26, 1865 Averasber, NC, Mar 16, 1865 Bentonville, Mar 19-20, 1865 Bennett Home, NC, Apr 26, 1865 Renselaer served under Capt. William T. Van Kuren in the 150th Regt. commanded by John H. Ketchum. He was discharged at the end of the war.

Record, Oct. 1955; Marriage record of Reformed Congregation of Old Rhinebeck (974.733.V25R, p. 85); family record of Katherine Mann Kipp; military and pension records (Philander and Alexander, both Union soldiers, died during the Civil War), Renselaer was Commissary Sergeant, promoted to Lieutenant). All siblings and self are buried in Rhinebeck except Elizabeth W. Simmons and Alexander (buried in London Park Cemetery, Baltimore, MD). William has no stone. Another source is the International Genealogical Index (IGI 1993 Ed. Vers. Q300): name was Renselaer, born in Milan Township, Dutchess County, NY. Name Van Renselaer is in letter from Isabel Coon Muller to Katherine Mann Kipp; also appears in marriage certificate. In DJW file are: photos of graves and family plot; a marriage certificate for his second marriage to Sarah Augusta Clement (Gildersleeve), his death certificate and military pension papers (widow's pension awarded to third wife, Isabel Quick).

Note: On June 1, 1923, Renselaer suffered a stroke affecting both sides of his body. He also suffered a growth in his bladder. His death was caused by a cerebral hemmorhage and cancer.
