  • Note: Richard was educated for the law at Lincoln's Inn, and when the civil war split England He took up the Royalist cause and became a captain of a troop of horse, under the famous cavalry general, Sir Marmaduke Langdale. For some notable act of gallantry he was knighted by the Marquis of Newcastle, and as Sir Richard Gledhill, Knight, met his fate in battle, being killed on Hessay Moor, near York in 1644. He was buried in St. Martin's Micklegate July 8th of that year.
