Probably died soon after 1851as he was unfit for work in the 1851 census.

Possibly William was eldest son of John and Janet Inglis but this cannot be proved as there i s no recorded birth that can be found. This theory therefore is pure supposition based on th e naming system and the assumption that Janet Inglis' husband John was also the son of Willia m May and Jean Wylie

    Notes for JANE STEIN:
According to Betty Hall, my second cousin who still lives in Harthill the reason why Jane an d Andrew May didn't marry was because her mother wouldn't give her permission( Andrew was onl y 17 at the time). Seemingly a ploughman's son was not good enough!
When Eliza was christened Alexander and Janet Weir tried to pass off their grandchild as thei r daughter but this was scored out in the old parish record and Jane Stein and Andrew May wer e designated as the parents with the words "born in fornication" added as was the custom a t that time.

Minister at second marriage was James Scott.

Witnesses to second marriage were Alexander Weir,( her step father?) and Janet Stein, presuma bly her aunt.

Just before her marriage to George Burns Russell Jane was working as a domestic servant at Ad diebrown Hill (farm), the home of her Uncle John and Aunt Janet who were her father's brothe r and sister who lived just outside West Calder. After her uncle died Aunt Janet came to liv e with Jane and husband James Kerr at Hilderston Hill. Aunt Janet died there.

In Torphichen churchyard there is a large gravestone with the inscription

    Erected by James Kerr
    in memory of my wife
    JEANIE STEIN
who died at Hilderston Hill on 18 October 1893
    aged 67 years
    and JAMES KERR
who died on 17 April 1912

    Notes for JEAN MAY:
In the 1851 census Jean is now Jane Millar and is down as head of the household and her age i s given as 37 yrs instead of the 22 yrs she is. However there are no other Jean or Janes in t he 1841 census which fit the bill and Jane Millar census 1851 was born in Charlestown so at t his point in time (May 2007) I believe Jane Millar to be the daughter of William May and Eliz abeth Drysdale in spite of the age discrepancy. I have not found the Millar family in the 186 1 census and so it seems they could have gone to England or emigrated.

    Notes for ELIZA MAY:
Eliza and James' last home together was Benhar Cottage, Eastfield, Harthill which was 2 door s away from my mother, Jenny Jackson's home. Presumably it was on visits to Grandpa and Grand ma Roberts that my father and mother became acquainted.

When Eliza died she left a little box with some trinkets and a precious letter received fro m her father not long before his very unexpected death. In the letter her father says how ple ased he is that she is visiting his sister in Currie and that he will pop down and see her. H e mentions how pleased he is that James has got a new and better paying job at the Oil Work s and also how delighted that she is bringing little Andrew to see him (i.e. my grandfathe r Andrew May Roberts aged about a year). This little box and letter is much treasured by he r great grandchild Betty Hall who lives only a few houses away. Davie Roberts, her brother st ill lives in Benhar Cottage but it is no longer a nursery. (There is a copy of the letter i n one of my genealogy folders.)

She was born 22 Feb 1872 in Treesbank, Shotts, Lanark 's, and died 16 Mar 1946 in 2 New Council Houses, East Main Street, Armadale at 4.00 p.m..

    Notes for WILLIAM ROBERTS:
Minister at the wedding was Alexander Watt
Witnesses to the wedding were William Mackie and Wilhelmina Green
Registrar was Andrew Morris - on 5 Jan 1910

Was the session clerk of Armadale West Kirk. there is a plaque commemorating him as you ente r Kkirk.
His wife had a baby clothes shop on East Main Street (south side). I believe he died at his h ouse in 61 East Main Street Armadale. The house backed on to a peice of ground where Italian s were interred during ww2. They used to sell hand crafted goods through the fence whilst I s tood with him and mimicked him with a clay pipe as he was smoking a pipe and spitting over t he railings at the top of the back steps.
We used to travel from Airdrie every Sunday to visit, my dad's parents. Dad had a brand new 1 937 Ford 8 and we went in it until he had to sell it and we then went by bus.
Coming home then at night was bad, as the bus would get filled up with drunks as they had t o leave Airdrie and Coatbridge to drink as they had to be "bona fide travellers" and so the y went to Forrestfield Inn.
