John Bratt was a locksmith. From 1698, he lived in Little London, Willenhall, Staffordshire County, England, which was well known for handmade locks, usually made in a shop at the rear of the residence. In those days, all locks were handmade.
It is now the home of Yale Locks.

"Albert Andriessen Bratt was one of the earliest Norwegian settlers in New Netherlands. He came from Fredrikstad, a town at the mouth of the Glommen, the largest river in Norway. In the early records he is often Albert de Noorman. After 1670
he became known as Albert Andriesz Bradt. Whether he was related to the Bratts of Norwegian nobility cannot be ascertained." This tradition is handed down among some of his descendants. The Bratt family lived in Bergen, Norway before the
early part of the fifteenth century when it moved to the Northern part of Gudbrandsdalen. It had a coat of arms until aboaut the middle of the sixteenth century.

Although many Bratts/Bradts originated in Scandinavia, our Bratts/Bretts may have originated in Brittany. They lived in Staffordshire for many generations. In Willenhall, over at least two centuries, members of the family specialized in the
making of locks and other door hardware.
