    John Bratt was a locksmith. From 1698, he lived in Little London, Willenhall, Staffordshire County, England, which was well known for handmade locks, usually made in a shop at the rear of the residence. In those days, all locks were handmade.
    It is now the home of Yale Locks.

  • Note: The name Bratt is English derived from the old Norse word Brattr meaning "dweller on a steep place, slope or hillside.
  • Note: Found a book in the Fort Wayne Library on the Albert Andriessen Bratt family.

    "Albert Andriessen Bratt was one of the earliest Norwegian settlers in New Netherlands. He came from Fredrikstad, a town at the mouth of the Glommen, the largest river in Norway. In the early records he is often Albert de Noorman. After 1670
    he became known as Albert Andriesz Bradt. Whether he was related to the Bratts of Norwegian nobility cannot be ascertained." This tradition is handed down among some of his descendants. The Bratt family lived in Bergen, Norway before the
    early part of the fifteenth century when it moved to the Northern part of Gudbrandsdalen. It had a coat of arms until aboaut the middle of the sixteenth century.

  • Note: We know that Bratts have been in Wolverhampton parish for a good while as church warden account records are pretty good back to the years 1520-1634.

  • Note: Marilyn Bratt Agee has a copy of the marriage register of St Peters Church in Wolverhampton for John and Sarah.

    Although many Bratts/Bradts originated in Scandinavia, our Bratts/Bretts may have originated in Brittany. They lived in Staffordshire for many generations. In Willenhall, over at least two centuries, members of the family specialized in the
    making of locks and other door hardware.
