From The 1993 Crouse Reunion Book, Melvin Crouse's oldest son, Hobart writes:
Melvin and Phebe's first home was "on the Mountain" near the home of our great-grandparents, Henderson and Mary Ann Howell Crowse, on property which is now a part of the Camping Area of Doughton Park. Part of the foundation of Dad and Momma's house is still standing and Momma's lilac bush is still there, though now overshadowed by many large trees.
During the next few years, Dad taught in country schools and helped his grandfather with farm work, wood cutting, etc. I was born in that house on September 14, 1910 and Wilma on February 25, 1913. within the next couple of years or so, due to the severity of winter weather, the family moved from the mountain to a place near the home of Mamma's parents, Andrew and Ella Ward. Our brother Robert Rudolph (Bob) was born there on August 2, 1916.
