    Amaziah SHAEFFER was known as "Alex".

    In 1855 Amaziah SHAEFFER, at age 12, moved from Indiana to Pilot Mound Township, Boone County, Iowa. In 1862 he moved to Dodge Township, Boone County, Iowa and lived there since except for 2 years that he made his home in Hamilton County, Iowa. He settled on his present farm in 1867.

    Amaziah SHAEFFER was a Civil War veteran. He enlisted on 28 Feb 1862 in Boonesboro, Iowa as a Union soldier becoming a private of Company K, Sixteenth Iowa Volunteer Infantry and served for 3 years during the War. On 18 Mar 1864 he veteranized and on 28 Mar 1865 was honorably discharged at Goldsboro, North Carolina. Amaziah SHAFFER participated in many of the most important battles of the war including Shiloh, Corinth, Iuka, Vicksburg, Meridian, Kenesaw Mountain, Nicajack Creek, Chattahooche river, Atlanta, and the celebrated march to the sea under Sherman. Later he was on detached duty for a time in a hospital at Atlanta and afterward participated in the battles of Savannah, Pocataligo, Cambechee river, Orangeburg, North Edisto river, Fayetteville, and Bentonville.

    Following the War Amaziah SHAEFFER purchased 80 acres in Hamilton County, Iowa and lived there for 2 years. He then came to Dodge Township, Boone County, Iowa and purchased 240 acres. There he farmed for 16 years after which he sold the property and purchased 160 acres where he lived for 7 years. He then disposed that farm and bought 80 acres east of Boone, Iowa. In 1906 he sold that property and retired from active farm life and took up his residence in Boone, Iowa.

    Amaziah SHAEFFER belonged to C. W. Crooks Post, No. 329, G. A. R.. While living in Dodge Township he held office continuously serving as road supervisor, constable, justice of the peace and school director. He has also been Township trustee and served as steward and as chairman of the building committee during the erection of the Bethel church.
