Bernhard GOETZMANN was in early life a great reader. He was apprenticed to learn the saddle and harness trade and worked in that business. He was also a great traveler and visited nearly all the great cities of trade in the old world. While on one of these trips while in Russia, or in Rome, his uncle, acting for him, drew for him a term of 7 years service in the army. Being informed of the fact, Bernhard hurried home and served 5 years at the end of which time he was granted a temporary furlough to be married. After marriage he farmed as they farm in that country and in his residence had a saddle and harness shop. In 1839 he came to America, with 2 brothers and a sister, and settled on Salt Creek, near the Muskingum river, Muskingum County, Ohio. He acquired a farm of about 100 acres of prairie land. In about 1845/46 he and several of his neighbors became convinced that co-operation was the best plan for farming and united with Dr. Giddings scheme of association and co-operation of which much has been said. Everyone conveyed their lands to someone in trust for the organization only to find it all vanish and they must begin life again with a large family and no property. In 1853 he had saved enough money to come to Iowa and he and his son Henry purchased a farm together north of Boone, Boone County, Iowa. Bernhard GOETZMANN in early life became a member of the Lutheran church.
