More than fifty years ago, perhaps in the late 1930s, when my mother was working in our family grocery store in Seymour Indiana, she was unpacking some strawberries and found a note inside one of the boxes. It contained the name and address of a young woman who had picked the strawberries, and who seems to have requested a pen pal. Mother wrote back to Audrey Guthery, in Vinemont (Cullman) Alabama, and they carried on a correspondence for many years, although I don't think they ever met. Every year, on our trips between Indiana and Florida, when we passed through Cullman County Alabama, Mother would comment, "That's where Audrey Guthrey lives." We all knew whom she was talking about. For several decades, they shared their lives and families with each other. I don't know the last time they were in contact, but Mother (Ethel Hall Patrick) died a couple of years ago, and I discovered Audrey Guthery's address while I was going through Mother's papers. I found Mrs. Guthery in the Social Security Death Index with a death date of 27 Mar 2003. It's probably not significant now, but I always found their correspondence to be touching. I felt that their long-distance relationship should be documented.
