  • ID: I12769
  • Name: Giles Franklin PARMAN
  • Suffix: , Sr. 1 2 3 4
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: 21 OCT 1758 in Northampton Co./Luzerne Co., (?) Pennsylvania 5 6 3 4 7
  • Death: bet 10 - 24 OCT 1832 in Corbin (Knox) KY 8 4 9
  • Note:

BIO: Information found on the WFT CD states that Giles Parman died in Knox County, TN; however, compiler found record of his will in "Early Kentucky Wills..."
WFT information indicates the Parmans owned property in Greene County, TN on the Nolachucky River. This property was deeded to Emanuel Youst Yarrick-Joseph Gregg (219 acres). In the list of sources on the CD, there are two references made to Greene Co., TN tombstones, but it is unclear whether this was in reference to Giles or to his first wife. He was apparently married the second time in Greene County.
There is some disagreement, too, about Giles Parman's birth. The WFT CD states he was born 21 Oct. 1758 in Luzerne County, PA; the other two sources (listed under "REF" below) state that he was born 10 October 1758, in Northhampton County, PA.
The WFT CD gives this individual's full name as "Senior Giles PARMAN" and his son's name as "Giles Franklin Parman, Jr." Anglee Smith and Deb Smyre give his name as "Giles Parman" (no middle name), but then his son's name is given as "Giles Franklin Parman."
E-mail contact with Florence L. Parman in September, 2000 confirmed compiler's theory that there is much confusion among the researchers on the correct data for Giles F. Parman, Sr. and his family. The early Parman history is greatly confused and full of contradictory data. No one seems to have found documentation to prove the reliability of any of this information. All seem to agree that "A" Giles Parman was at one time a resident of Pennsylvania, however the county of his birth and/or residency is controversial. There was a Giles Parman who was later a resident of Green County, TN...no one seems to have done much research on that era of the Parman families lives. Giles F. Parman or "A" Giles Parman died in Corbin County, KY. No one seems to be able to verify Giles F. Parman's parents' identity.
Mrs. Parman, wife of Willard Parman, reports that there are good arguments that either Thomas or James Parman might have been the father of Giles, Sr., however she, too, has found just enough evidence to confuse the issue. A James Parman "was born in England 1728. In "Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in VA," p 51 reads: 'James parman proves importation direct from Great Britain.' (Augusta County)
Mrs. Parman also reports, "Thomas Parman appears in records of 'Emigrants from England to America 1718 - 17 59.' There is the following entry: '2093 Parman, Thomas. St. Faiths London. Taylor. J. Ball 4 yr. VA 28 M 18 Dec 1728 119.' The code to reading the above entry is: Name, Parish or county, occupation, initials of agent, years of service (I presume this refers to indenture), colony to which bound, age, whether he signs or marks his name (s or m), date of indenture, page no..."
Mrs. Parman then raises the question whether this might be the "immigrant ancestor of Giles F., Sr. ... Thomas would have been born in 1700 ..."Or could he have been James' father?"
Mrs. Parman includes the following notes, copied only in part from her e-mail of 16 Sept. 2000:
While Giles is "supposed" to be born in Luzerne Co. PA (at the time of his birth Luzerne Co. had not been carved out and if he was, indeed, born in that area, it would have been in the Wyoming Valley, then a portion of Northampton Co.), the first documentation we find for Giles being in the area is the Census of 1790. He is listed as "Giles Parmin". Shortly after the census was taken (about 1790) he sold 100 acres in Northampton Co., PA and was in Greene Co., Tn by 1793 where he bought 222 acres from John and Agnes Lee. (...information ...from Thelma Salisbury 1-24-1999 a Parman descendant, ...e-mail address: thelma@salisbury.net).
I have found documentation of him being in Greene Co. in the Tennessee State Library and Archives...in 1794 ...appointed...overseer of the road to be built between Dry Branch to Cove Creek...(Green Co. TN Minutes of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, Book #1, 1783-1796, p 226...) ...Tax List...Giles is listed as having 32- acres of land and 25 squirrel scalps...He is also listed as "Giles Parman for the Estate of Thomas Woolsey, deceased, 200 acres". After Elizabeth died, Giles married Thomas Woolsey's widow, Phoebe
Gilbert Woolsey. Giles received a 50 acre land grant. ..."Chapter VI Kentucky Land Warrants (1816-1873) The Counties of Kentucky, page 678. It reads:
    Grantee: Parman, Giles Sr.
    Acres: 50
    Book: A-2 Page: 284
    Date Survey: 4-21-1832
    County: Knox
    Watercourse: Flatt Creek
Giles was a founding member of the Flay (Flat?) Branch - New Providence Meeting House (Baptist Church) in 1803. This.... "Goodspeed's History of Green Co." published 1887.
Witness to sale of land: August 29, 1814, Recorded in Knox Co., KY Book B, listed with wife Phoebe.
On another e-mail from Florence Parman, dated 24 Jan 1001, she sends the following additional biographical data for Giles PARMAN, Sr., b. 1758: ...I have found additional information on Giles, b. 175(8). I
have found him in PA as early as 1778 listed in "Proceedings and Collections of the Wyoming Historical and Genealological Soc." Vol. V; pp 231-241. This consists of a list of land owners in the Wyoming Valley. The Susquehanna Co. had something like 7 districts, WilkesBarre, Kingston, Plymouth, E-over (Andover?), Pittson,
Exeter and Lackaway. Giles Parmon is listed as living in the Plymouth District. Because all of these settlers were former residents of Connecticut and Giles is supposed to be a survivor of the Wyoming Valley Massacre, I am now looking for him and perhaps his father in Connecticut. Haven't had any success yet, but still digging...

    • Married: ABT 1776 in Northampton, Pennsylvania 10 11 12
    • Note:

      NOTES:
The WFT CD indicates this marriage would have taken place prior to December, 1776, when this couple's first son, Emanuel was born. This would be a reasonable calculation, however, there appears to be no documentation to support it.
Florence Parman, however, reports this marriage took place in 1780 in PA.
This would indicate that Giles F. was married prior to this, and that Emanuel was not Elizabeth Penn's child, or that Mrs. Parman's date for the marriage is in error, or
that Emanuel was born to this couple out of wedlock. By the same token, the couple's second child, Mary Catherine was also reported to have been born prior to 1780. (Mrs. Parman has no date of birth for Mary Catherine.)
