John, b. ca. 1645, d. 1717, m. 24 Jan 1666 Damaris Arnold, b. 23Feb 1648, d. 1720, dau. of Benedict & Damaris (Westcott) Arnold. On 13 May 1667 he and 3 others were directed to go from house to house throughout Newport to take a precise and exact account of all the arms, ammunition and weapons of war each person had. He became a freeman of Newport 29 Oct 1668. He was a juryman 7 Jun1671 and a deputy to the General Assembly from Newport in 1679, 1682, 1683, and 1695. In 1692 his wife became a member of the Seventh Day Baptist Church. In 1696 he was a major for the island. ON 29 Nov 1715 he and wife Damaris, in consideration of infirmities, deeded 102 acres and a dwelling house to son Josiah. John made his will 3 Feb 1717, and it was proved in Newport 4 Mar 1717. Executor son Josiah. To wife Damaris all household goods and use for life of land in town. To son Josiaha lot in Newport. To son George the rest of lands undisposed of, my windmill, twenty ewe sheep and a cow. To grandchild Jemima Meacham ?5 at age 18. To grandchild John Meacham ?5 at age. To grandchild John Jersey ?5 at age.
