Elaine attended Carol College in Waukesha, was trained as a nurse and served during WW II, in The Seventh Army during the invasion of Anzio Beach. Her hospital unit and tent was under fire and sh e helped evacuate the wounded to bunkers. A German plane also jettisoned his bombs over the hospital ten attempting to escape from a American Spitfire that was on his tail. Two nurses were killed i n this incident. Elaine was one of three nurses awarded the Silver Star for this bravery. Lt. Roe evacuated 42 patients with "such cool courage" that her commanding officer said to her, "She neve r showed any excitement." " It was her calmness that ruled the tent although shell fragments were ripping through the canvas." She was subsequently injured jumping over trenches and was sent back t o the U.S. to recover from a broken foot.1 2 3 4 Father: Ogden B.
