    The following passage appears to be the last will of Casparus Garretson wr itten in his own handwriting on Dec. 3, 1726 (Quaker date 3d 12m (Feb) 172 6/1727); (Delaware Wills #26) Casparus Garretson is the great-great-great- great-great-great-grandfather of Jacqueline Martineau Herzog, Pierre Marti neau, Jr., and Cherrye Martineau; Casparus Garretson is the great-great-gr eat-great-great-great-great grandfather of David Herzog, Linda Herzog Bach man, Heidi Herzog Rowe, Pierre Martineau, III, Susan Martineau. The follo wing comes from the original handwriting of a photocopy of the original do cument. It contains the same spelling as was used and as some of the wor ds are hard to make out it may contain a few guesses. Any guesses are fol lowed by a (?)
    "In the name of God amen the third day of the twelfth month in the yea re of our Lord 1726 I Casparus Garretson of Cristiana Creek in the Coun ty of New Castle yoaman being sick weak in body but of perfect mind and me mory. thanks be given unto God therefore calling to mind the mortali ty of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die d oe make and ordain this my last will and testament that is to say principa lly and (?) first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of G od that gave it and for my body I recommend it to the earth to be buri ed in a Christian like and decent manner at the discretion of my executo rs nothing doubting but at the General Resurrection I that receive the sa me again by the mighty power of God and as touching (?) such worldly esta te where will (?) it hath pleased God to bless me in this life I give devi se and dispose of the same in the following manner and form.
    Item: I give and bequeath to ann my dearly beloved wife whom I likewise c onstitute make and ordain my onely and sole executor of this my last wi ll and testament all and singular my estate boath real and personal unti ll such time as my sons come to the age of twenty and one yeares th en my eldest son John shall have my home plantation and land belonging the re unto and my other two sons that is william and Josep shall have that pa rsel or piece of land lying on the Lime kiln Road william shall have th at half of the (?) Land which is now Improved and Josep the other half th ey onely paying unto my daughters the sum of thirty pounds Courent money w hen thy shall come to age then they to (?) the afore said Land (?) free ly enjoy the same they their heirs and assigns for ever
    and it is my will also that John and william shall build an house for Jose ph and cleare one acre of Land and plant one hundred aple trees there on
    and it is my will that my sons and daughters shall each of them have an eq ual share or (?) of my moveable estate and I doe hereby latterly (?) disal ow revoke and disanul all and every other former testaments wills legaci es and execute by me in any wise before this time named will and bequeath ed ratifying & confirming this & no other to be my last will and testame nt in witness(?) where of I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day a nd year above written (signed) Casparus Garretson
    Signed sealed published pronounced and declared by ye I Casparus Garrets on as his last will and testament in the presence us the subscribe rs (signed) Garrett Garretson, unknown signature, Edward Blake, un known signature Casparus Garretson and his w ife lived at Mill Creek Hundred, New Castle, De. He was appointed overse er of the New Castle (Quaker) Friends' Meeting July 2, 1726.

    The following facts and notes and items are taken from the book "Six Colum biana County, Ohio, Pioneer Families, Family 5. William Leech (1776-186 5) and Jane Garretson: Ancestors and Descendants" by William Brook Fetter s, copyright 1998, Bowie, MD:

    (1) Casparus was the 2nd son of Jan and Ann Gerritsen (later spelled Garre tson). Fetters places his birth year as about 1684.
    (2) It is not known where his given name Casparus came from.
    (3) in 1684, William Penn granted a patent to Casparus's father for a 4 00 acre tract on land called "New View" located near the SE bank of the Ch ristina River in New Castle Hundred, New Castle County, on the Delawar e. Fetters believes that Casparus was born here.
    (4) Casparus inherited some of his father's land and bought more. The la nd was located as close as 1/3 of a mile from the present Delaware Pennsyl vania state line.
    (5) Casparus became a Quaker in the mid 1720's. He was an overseer of t he New Castle Friends Meeting officially appointed 5 5m (Jul) 1726
    (6) His death is placed at about 6d 12m (Feb 1726/27) probably in the hou se at New View. His age if born in 1684, was 42 at his death.
