    The Will of John Markham, Chesterfield County, Virginia:

    In the name of God Amen I, John Markham, of the County of C hesterfield being sick and weak of body but of perfect min d & memory make & ordain this my last will & testament, i n manner and form following:

    First I give & bequeath unto my daughter Rebecca one Negr o fellow named Bristol with his wife Lucy, and their two so ns Jonny & Dublin with all their future Increase to her & h er heirs forever, also one feather Bed of furniture at he r brother Bernards.

    Item I give unto my daughter Judith one negro man George wi th his wife Amey & their son London with all their future I ncrease to her & her heirs forever, also one feather Bed o f furniture, But in Case of the death of either of my daugh ter Rebecca or Judith before they arive of lawfull age or M arry, then my desire is that their part be equally divide d by my Executors one half to go to the Surviving Sister Re becca or Judith and the other half to be equally divided be tween my four sons John Vincent George & Archibald, but i n case of the death of both of my said daughters before the y arrive of lawfull age or marry that then the whole of the ir parts be equally divided between my sons aforesaid

    Item I give unto my daughter Catherine Smith one feather Be d of Furnitu

    Item I give unto my son William Five pounds current Money

    Item I give unto my son Bernard five pounds current Money

    Item I give & bequeath unto my four Sons John Vincent Georg e and Archibald my Negroes York, Toby, Wiggom, Tom, Silvie , & Aaron, to be equally divided between them and their hei rs forever

    All the rest of my Estate both real & personal of every kin d whatsoever I give & sense to my Executors hereafter name d (except my Land & Ferry opposite to Warwick in Henrico Co unty) in trust to be by them sold for the best price that m ay be got and in such manner as they shall think proper, an d the Money issuing from such Sale after my just debts ar e paid is to be equally divided between my four sons aforen amed John, Vincent, George & Archibald or so much thereof a s will make their proportion of my Estate with what I hav e already given them amount to the Sum of two hundred & fif ty pounds current Money.

    My Lands houses & Ferry opposite to Warwick in Henrico Coun ty aforesaid I give & devise to my Executors hereafter name d to be rented for the best price that can be got & the mon ey issuing from such Rent I give to be equally divided betw een my sons John Vincent George & Archibald aforesaid and m y mind is that when Brett Randolph's Estate is divided betw een his children who ever of them get married shall have th e offer of my aforesaid Land & Ferry, and pay to my heirs t he price the said Land & Ferry shall be valued to by thre e different men. But if they refuse to give the price it sh all be valued at That then my Executors sell the same for t he best price that can be got and in Case the Legacies whic h I have given my sons John, Vincent, George & Archibald sh ould not amount to the sum of Two hundred & fifty pounds th en I desire it may be made up out of the money arising fro m the sale of such land & ferry, and if there should be an y overplus after paying my four Sons the legacies aforesai d then I give to my daughters Rebecca & Judith so much as w ill make their shares of the estate with what I have alread y given them amount to the Sum of two hundred fifty pound s and in case there shall be any thing remain after payin g the Legacies aforesaid I desire the same may be equally d ivided between all my children. And lastly I constitute an d appoint my friend Benjamin Watkins and my sons Bernard, V incent and George to be Executors of this my last Will an d Testament. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my han d and Seal this twentieth day of October in the Year of ou r Lord One Thousand seven hundred and Seventy.

    BOOK IV, PART I
    MARKHAMS OF BECCA

    VIRGINIA MARKHAMS
    John Markham of Chesterfield County (Virginia) was a Justic e of the Peace, and High Sheriff in 1765. He died in Februa ry 1771, leaving a son named Bernard by his wife Catherin e Mathews. Bernard Markham was a member of the Revolutionar y Committee of Public Safety for Chesterfield County in 177 4-5, and lieutenant-colonel. He lived at 'Ware', three mile s from Richmond (Va.).

    His brothers were John, whose descendants are in Kentucky , and settled near Frankfort; his sons were William, George , and Bernard — this family possessed John's family Bible ( 1720), but it was lost during the Civil War; George, of Che sterfield County, whose son Vincent married Obedience Beasl ey and had four sons; Vincent, Judge of Denver, born 1829 a nd died 1895; and David Markham of Arizona, William, Archib ald, and three daughters.

    Bernard married Mary Harris, and had a son, George Markham , who married Eliza Evans and went to Alabama. His sons wer e:

    Dr. James Bernard Markham of Pulaski (Tennessee), married t o Annie Hayes, by whom he had two daughters, Bernard, bor n 1880, and Sarah, born 1884. George Evans Markham, born i n 1806, who had a son, George Spence Markham. William Henr y Markham of St. Louis, father of George, born in 1859, an d Robert, born in 1866. Besides George, who went to Alabama , Colonel Bernard Markham had a son John, who married Luc y Champe Fleming in 1770, and had a son William. This Willi am had two sons, the Rev. Thomas R. Markham, D.D., a Presby terian minister at New Orleans, who died childless in 1894 , aged 65, and William F. Markham of Huntersville (Texas) , father of Dr. Thomas Osborne Markham.
