BIOGRAPHY: Richard Stout is commonly considered the founder for a very large number of American descendants, especially Stout's of English descent. Although thought to have been illiterate, his drive and determination was crucial in settling the new world.
As a young man in England he is reported to have fallen in love with a girl who his father did not approve of. When his father refused to let them marry, Richard enlisted aboard a sailing ship (it is not clear whether Royal Navy or commercial) and was at sea for 7 years.
In about 1640 Richard left sea service to live in Dutch New Amsterdam (NY, NY). He served as a soldier in defense of the Dutch colony against several Indian attacks.
In Spring 1643 (the "Year of Blood"), he joined Lady Moody's new Anabaptist settlement of Gravesend, Long Island (She was a daughter of Walter Dunch of England and widow of Sir Henry Moody.) At Gravesend he has been cited as the largest landowner (many others had been killed by Indians) with 17 acres of Tobacco under cultivation and married Penelope there. A period of about 10 years peace with the Indians was threatened in 1655 but diaster averted with his formation of a firm defense. (See Penelope's notes for her crucial role in this affair.)
He and Captain John Stout were leaders in planning a settlement across the bay in what is now New Jersey and in negotiating with the Indians there. In Dec 1663 through early 1664 he moved his family there as an original Dutch patentee of Monmouth Co. NJ. (records in the NJ Archives). (This land lay on the south bank of the Raritan river and is probably the South Amboy area today). Later that same year, the English took possession of New Amsterdam from the Dutch and the his land rights were put in jeapardy. (Note that in the land records, he is shown as depicted as having only 2 sons in 1665, which contradicts some of the established dates of birth for his children.)
By 1675, Richard Stout had moved to Middleton, NJ and in 1676 acquired a 430 acre tract called Tanganawamesse at the head of Romanes Brook. He acquired an additional 745 acres in 1677. He is considered a founder of the Hopwell, New Jersey baptist church although this work was probably done primarily by his children. He had successfully founded what became the state of New Jersey and raised 10 healthy children to populate it, and deeded them about 1800 acres.
