The Gordon Family came from Spottsylvania County, Virginia to Wilkes County, North Carolina and then migrated to Georgia. William Henry was the first one to come to Jones County. He was born May 17, 1780 in North Carolina and died July 5, 1866 in Jones County, Georgia.
There were five men with him and they crossed the Oconee River between Athens and Millidgeville, Georgia. They were walking and had $3.00 between them. Two of the men were John Towler, Sr. and a Jackson(Joe Ben Jackson's Ancestor). They camped for a time at Round Oak where new would-be-settlers were already encamped. Among them were the Palmer family--he met his future wife Leah there. They took up land on the Caney Creek Ridge and traveled no more. Jackson and William Henry settled in that area. The other Gordons went on to Alabama and Mississippi.
