    BIOGRAPHY: Laura Lee Cutlip

Graveside services will be held for Laura Lee Craig, 79, of Coos Bay, at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 19, at the Coos River Pioneer Cemetery in Coos Bay. Viewing will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, at Myrtle Grove Funeral Service, 94105 Rink Creek Lane in Coquille.

Laura Lee was born Oct. 13, 1928, in North Bend, to Lorenzo and Stella Cutlip. She died Aug. 8, 2008, in Lake Oswego. Laura Lee spent the last four months of her life in Lake Oswego, where she could be closer to her children.

She was raised in North Bend and Coos Bay. She attended Catlin Gabel, a girl's school, in Portland and graduated from North Bend High School. When she was 10 years old, her father was mayor of North Bend. She was the flower girl for the dedication and ribbon cutting of the McCullough Bridge and as the child of the North Bend's mayor, she christened a new Greyhound Bus "The City of North Bend" and the power boat "Sea Grant." Laura Lee taught Red Cross swimming for years in Coos County before marrying.

From 1962 to 1967, Laura Lee and her husband, Wilbur G. Craig, lived in Menlo Park, where they made many lifelong friends. In the summer of 1967, they moved back to Coos County with their four children and lived up the Coos River. In 1978, Laura Lee finished her husband's term on the Coos Bay Port Commission after he died suddenly; she served an additional term as a port commissioner. During her life, Laura Lee spent most of her time supporting her four children in their various sports, Girl Scouts, 4-H activities, Job's Daughters and various school related activities.

She volunteered for the American Red Cross and American Heart Association. Laura Lee also was very interested and active in politics, due to her mother, Stella Cutlip Bergen, had served a term in the Oregon State Legislature in 1943.

Laura Lee loved living up Coos River, where she had room for lots of pets and a large garden where she raised flowers, berries and vegetables and enjoyed canning.

Laura Lee is survived by her four children, Laurie (Craig) Hackett, Cindy (Craig) Finlayson, Bro Craig and Lorenzo Craig; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Lorenzo G. (Ren) Cutlip; her husband, Wilbur G. Craig; her longtime friend, Robert Hamilton; and her cousin, Kenneth (Bo) Oliver.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Friends of the Coos County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 911, Coos Bay, OR 97420 or to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of Myrtle Grove Funeral Services-Bay Area, 269-2851.
