  • Note:
Never married according to a descendant of Jeptha and a descendant of Sarah; no husband listed in any records. According to the descendant of Sarah, Jennie had the five children by a man named Hue Tatumn Crane. "Hugh Crane" doesn't appear in any census, but there is a Hugh Tatum who lived near Cranes in early censuses. That Hugh Tatum married Mary Rowe and died in Dawsonville, GA in 1862. His family is included separately in this genealogy in case there is a connection.

A 37-marker Y-DNA test of a descendant of Jennie's son, James, exactly matched a descendant of one Thomas Hood (b. 1770 in VA, d. 1820 in TN). GenCircles genealogies and census records show Hood families in Pendleton Dist., SC in 1810 and 1820 who lived near Cranes, the closest being Enoch Hood and Robert Hood who lived close to Jennie's probable father, John Crane. In light of this evidence, it's not very likely that Hugh Tatum was James's father. (However, he still could have been the father of others of Jennie's children.)

Jennie lived with her son, Franklin, in her last years according to her obituary. She died in his home. He had just turned away from her to pour her a cup of coffee. When he turned back around to give it to her, she was dead.

Information on her children came from the Bible of her listed son, Berry Benson Crane. The descendant of Jeptha said that her aunt said that Jeptha was Jennie's only child; she had him when she was "very young". Her obituary said that she was survived by three sons, one in Alabama and two in Pickens County, SC. In the 1900 Census, she is shown as being born in Jun 1796, a widow with 2 living out of 5 children, both parents born in SC. The mother of the descendant of Sarah said that all five of the Cranes listed together in Berry's old Bible with their birthdays were Jennie's children, those being Jeptha, James, Sary Caroline, Berry Benson, and Franklin P.

Her earliest estimated birth year from 1850, 1870, and 1880 Census records would be 1800. Then, the 1900 Census shows her birth year as "1796". Family accepts a birth year of 1797, given in her obituary. It seems to me that back then, age 18 wouldn't be markedly young enough to be considered "very young" when she had Jeptha (Jan. 1815). Unless a more primary source for her birth year turns up, I'm considering the earlier years to be suspect. However, she probably wasn't born after 1801, either.

In the Old Pendleton database, Jeptha ("Jephta"), James, and Franklin P. are shown as hers, while Sarah Caroline ("Caroline Sarah") and Berry Benson ("Benson Berry") are shown with "Susan" and "John" as being children of Patrick and Martha Crane. The moderator didn't know where that information came from, and there are no references.

"Jane" and "Jeptha" Crain are shown with accounts rendered against the estate of one Elizabeth Crain, admin. 17 March 1856.

I'm hesitant to allow downloads because some of the connections are circumstantial, or may be considered by some to be privileged (if so, please let me know ASAP). Please verify anything you use from this file. Also, sorry so many individuals are shown as Living, but I'm hoping that connections between families can still be tracked.
